new question about IgM

Here are my results:
HSV1 IgG 2.72
HSV2 IgG <0.91
HSV IgMI/II Combo 1.24

I know that the IgM is supposed to be worthless because it cannot differentiate between type I vs. type II, however IgM ususally means a recent infection even if it is a recurrent recent infection.  I have never had a cold sore, so I havent' had a recent or recurrent HSV-1 infection.  So could this mean that I have contraced HSV-2 infection?  Thanks

The thing is - you should've never had the igm drawn in the first place. It's of no use whatsoever outside of the research setting in adults for the purpose of diagnosing herpes.  Totally disregard it's results and don't give them another moments thought. If you get nothing else out of this forum get that the igm herpes test is not worthwhile and shouldn't ever be drawn.

Your igg is + for hsv1.  Even though you can't recall any obvious cold sores, most adults do have hsv1 and most of them don't get obvious cold sores to know it without getting blood testing done.

If you are wondering if perhaps you've contracted hsv2 recently, you need to wait and repeat your hsv2 igg 4 months post your last sexual encounter.  You can get faster results if you get your current/last partner tested and they share their hsv2 results with you.  If they are hsv2 negative then you know you don't need additional testing.

Have you partaken in any activities in the past 4 months that put you at risk for HSV2? If you have, I recommend being retested with an HSV IgG typespecific test 4 months after your risk of exposure occurred. By this point, if the IgM meant anything, it should show up on the IgG.
