potential herpes risk/infection?

hi there.. Approximately 4 weeks ago I was sexually intimate with a female (I'm a male) who I didn't know very well. She performed unprotected oral sex on me and she rubbed her vagina over my exposed penis for a short time (no penetration and little fluid).. 2 days later I immediately had trouble urinating and noticed blood in my urine. Went to the ER and the urinalysis showed bacteria and blood in the urine. They diagnosed a UTI (I'm a male so isn't this too rare of a chance?) They prescribed antibiotics and treated me for gonnareah and clamydia. Everythin was fine after that...except for one day is noticed some slight abdominal pain for 20 minutes and on another day I felt a stinging at the tip of my penis that lasted two hours but when away after I drank water. I've also felt muscle twitches and I'm not sure if its form the antibiotics. I took levaquinn but I've been off if for a while but I still have twitches. I have no sores or blisters. I took a early full std panel test after 17 days post exposure and came back negative for type one and two on the IGG and IGM tests. Is the reassuring? Or is it too early? I know the girl has cold sores because she told me she gets them from time to time.

Hi terri -

I just got my negative test results at 14 weeks for both types. Can I put this behind me? Not sure if I just don't produce antibodies or if it's still to early for an accurate test as I was two weeks short of 16

Thanks for all you do here....I hope u have a fantastic holiday

At 6 weeks out from infection, about 70% of those who are going to become positive, will be positive.  Those numbers probably apply to you as well.

However, the HSV 1 test, as I mentioned, misses 1 out of 10 cases of HSV 1.  Its impossible to say from your description what might be going on with your lips.  If you get another set of symptoms, you may wish to have them swabbed at the time.

I will add that it was a type specific test. I don't have the numbers but it was done at quest. The doc said my values were well below the cutoff...not sure if this matters

Also ...I was negative for the third time on the type 1 test so I assume I don't have it though I thought I did. My first outbreak was over 10 years ago and was bad. My upper and bottom lips turned red and became swollen and eventually a yellowish crust formed. The first outbreaks also made my lips look darker. Now they are much mild and are not very visible. starts off as a tingle on small part of top lip and becomes a little rough and flakey....usually spreads to the rest of top lip and heals in a week. I use abreva. I usually get outbreaks twice a year and only in the summer

Is this oral herpes? It looks nothing like the Internet pictures. Maybe I don't produce antibodies?

Hi terri -

How accurate is a test at 8 weeks? Would 80% be fair? I was negative. Thanks for all you do

The value of a test done at 17 days that is negative is not relevant at all, actually.

Hi terri one more quick question and illleave you alone....I know that I had the igg test way too early but is the 'score' important?...my igg for type 2 at 17 days was .05...if I was infected could it be possible for this level to be higher yet most likely still negative?.....

The small red bumps could be many things on the thigh - in fact, most people have them from time to time and they are usually not herpes.  It would be hard to say what they are without a swab test for virus and/or bacteria.

thanks terri -

some quick additional points and i'll leave you alone..=)

i noticed some small red bumbs on my lower thigh...about half way between my groin and knee. is this located in an unusual spot for herpes? they are red and itch a little bit..especially when it rubs up against my jeans. they are slighty raised , red, and resemble pimples on the face...

The blood IgG test for HSV 1 misses one out of every 10 cases of HSV 1, so you could well be infected and the test missed it, yes.

I don't feel that your symptoms are consistent with herpes, no.  And yes, it is rare for men to get traditional urinary tract infections, but you could have picked up another STD organism in the urethra that is neither gonorrhea nor chlamydia, that the antibiotics successfully treated.  17 days is too early for a fully conclusive result on the HSV antibody test, yes, and you should only use the IgG test, not the IgM test if you repeat this 3-4 months down the road.  The IgM test is unreliable.

I will also note that I always thought that I had cold sores... they do not look like the internet pictures but they are small tiny bumbs that appear from time to time and clear up in about a week. Usually there is a tingling before they arrive... so i'm a little suspect about the test...maybe its something else? Surely the IGG test for type one would have been positive.
