result analysis

My results were: HSV 2 IgG, Type Spec: 1.13 H (normal: <.91).  The date of my last possible exposure would have been 6 months ago.  At the time of testing, the doctor said I had a bacterial infection "down there" for which she prescribed Metronidazole and I had not taken it yet when the blood was drawn.  I've never had a history of outbreaks (the one time I was freaked out, the doctor said it was an ingrown hair follicle).  Though my doctor's prescribed Valtrex, I'm skeptical to take it.  Should I have cause to be worried/consider myself infected with Herpes?

no, bv wouldn't be an issue with herpes igg blood testing.

they haven't changed the scale because there are a significant portion of folks under 3.5 who are positive. there are false positives with every single test you've ever had done by your medical provider.

I wouldn't bother with any herpes antivirals. only about a 15% likelihood that you really have hsv2 from your test results.

Hi Grace,

A few questions.

1.  Could my bacterial infection have interfered with the test?  I'm very confused about this IgG test as to why it isn't black and white.  Do the antibodies they test for have potential to be antibodies for other things or something?  If things below a 3.5 are considered a low positive, why isn't the scale changed to have the cutoff at 3.5?

2.  If I choose to do the western blot (which honestly, I don't have the money for at this time, but I haven't been sleeping for two weeks now, over this), will taking Valtrex mess up the results?  Give a false negative?

Thanks for all your help.

correct - you have a low positive which needs confirmed with further testing.  if your provider is unfamiliar with confirming low positives , they should read the 2010 cdc herpes guidelines - all the info they need is in there!

i think that is a low positive. i would not take the valtrex- return to your doctor and ask for a western blot test.

My second question is that if I want to be re-tested, would taking Valtrex affect my results?
