Diagnosed with anal warts. Please help. Just a few questions:

1.) Does the severity of the outbreak also indicate chances of recurrence or the length of resolution?

2.) I immediately quit smoking as soon as I found out, and had started taking multivitamins. Will that help reducing the chances of a recurrence once I have the warts treated?

3.) I have a couple of non visible ones (inside the anus). Is it best to just leave them alone and see if my immune system can clear them, or should I get surgery for them as well?

4.) From your own experiences / statistics, how long does an outbreak last, and how often has it recurred?

5.) Despite being very, very diligent with condom use for the past decade, i still got them internally as well. Is it possible they got there via fingers (aka genital - hand - anus)?

Some answers:

1. No. There doesn't seem to be any one cause of re-occurrence. The clearance time depends on the good health of the infected.

2. That will help. Smoking has been linked to getting more warts. Get more rest, exercise, reduce stress, eating healthy and reducing alcohol consumption all help. Although there is no CDC agreement on the immune system health to rid oneself of warts, it is common sense.

3. Get rid of the inner ones if you can. The quicker they are gone, the sooner your recovery starts.

4. Outbreaks depend on the individual and their health. Most last 3-12 months. Some last 2 years. About 10% of the infected get more warts after the first ones go away but no idea who is in this 10%.

5. It is possible but not definite that it spread via hands. GWs like warm and wet genital skin and that is why some get anal warts. Even for straight men who have never had anal sex.

You need to understand that this virus is not one size fits all and there is a lot of variation with no idea of why. Wearing condoms help but not that much as you found out.  Good luck in your recovery. Give it 3-6 months after the last GW is gone before having sex. Your highest priority is your good health.
