Does Getting a colcoscopy hurt?

My Doc called and told me that my pap was abnormal and to come in Monday cause they may have to do a colcoscopy, I read on here where one woman said that she was afraid to go back because of the pain from it, I've went to countless of different websites and they all said it was painless that only if a biopsy ((i think thats the right word)) had to be done that, that may hurt.. so my question is do getting a colcoscopy hurt??? What does it feel like, is it just like getting a pap, worse what??? Someone please help

I just had one done Friday and it just felt like a pap , to get cells she users new brush device instead of a pinching device, it is now Sunday and I'm still using a panty liner but no pads, it's better to have test done and know what you're dealing with than to leave it in checked

Yes it does hurt.  I have a high tolerance for pain and this is a procedure that should be done in a hospital or with some type of pain killer.  When they went far up into the cervix I began to scream and then cry.  The doctor compared the pain to pre-term labor.  This should definitely NOT be done without painkiller...

Normally a Colposcopy is not painful. Yes it is like a pap but take a little longer as they look through a large microscope. They then put Vinegar on a large cotton swab like a giant Q-tip. If there are any abnormal cells they will turn white. Again the Dr. will look through the scope and if she see's white area's she will take a biopsy. The biopsy can be a little uncomfortable as she will be pinching off a small piece of skin. It will feel like a pinch and you may get some cramping but that is usually it. You may have some bleeding afterwords and that is to be expected. Take some Ibuprofen just before you go in and that will help with some of the cramping. If you are not expecting it to hurt that much it will not.  Stress makes you react to things differently so the less you stress about the procedure the better it will go. I am gong to have one done also but as a nurse I know what to expect so am not worried at all. I am worried about the results.   Take one day at a time and hope all goes well.

Yes it  hurts, i just had one in March 2010. It was very painful. I thought it was because i am a older person i am 61 years old. This was my first time having an abnormal pap smear.  I had a biopsies done. So i don't know if i had not had it done if it would have been painless.  But you will get over it. It took me a week.
