HPV

I have been diagnosed with HPV. I had to follow-up every 3-6 months. Finally I had 6 regular paps and was able to go back to my primary because it looked like the HPV cleared up and my immune system took care of it. Well as soon as I went back to my primary guess what? I had another abnormal pap and am going back to my OBGYN again. If my immune system took care of it the first time, why did it show up again?? Can HPV go away and come back?

I had 6 regular paps in a row at a specialist, then he said I could go to back to my primary. Well when I had an abnormal test again, I was sick of my last OBGYN office staff because they were not very nice, so I decided to go to a different OBGYN and is supposed to be the best in the city. This OBGYN said that he can see the abnormal area on my cervix just by looking at it, so maybe my last OBGYN missed the area for 6 months in a row. LOL. I am not sure. I am positive that my boyfriend does not cheat on me though. I was told that it can go away and come back though. It never really officially goes away, it just hides in the surrounding tissues or cells, so it can become inflammed or abnormal again. I mean think about the common cold, we catch the virus and every year it mutates. Our body builds up antibodies to fight of the infection even though it is a virus and our immune systems can fend off the virus and we keep doing it every year, but if we do encounter the same flu virus with the same make-up that we had once before, our antibodies can fight it off again because it remembers that virus strain. I guess the same goes for the HPV. We fight it off or so we think and it comes back so we have to fight it off again. Its a never ending cycle. Thanks for the post. Do you know what that specific HPV test is called by any chance? I know that they can group the strains to tell you if you have the precancerous one or the one with the warts. Is that the specific test you are talking about?

For how long did you experience regular paps? There is also a HPV specific test out for women that is more accurate that pap smears. It will detect HPV in instances that paps cannot, so you may want to ask your physician about that.

If HPV is cleared from your system it does not magically come back; you need to be reinfected. However, the problem here could be inaccurate paps or ones that did not test infected areas. Another option, and I really hate to assert this... but, if you happened to be clear of the virus for a fair amount of time, is there any part of you that believes your boyfriend could have brought another strand into the relationship?

Please feel free to post new information with any additional questions.

My Best,
Rainn

Did you have the high risk variety? Or low risk genital warts? I know the high risk can be a little harder.  Has it been 2 years of normal paps?

LOL. No, I have been with the same guy going on 4 years now. We are planning to get married after I finish school. I talked with my Gyno today about it. I found out that, well for one thing, it is a virus, so it can lay dormant in your body with no signs and then come about again. My immune system did not take care of the virus the first time around. He is having me try some herbal remedy now to boost my immune system so hopefully that should take care of it. Until then I am going to my Gyno every 3 months to keep an eye on it. I also have an ultrasound coming up this week, so we'll see. Thanks for responding though.
