Is it genital warts or something else

How common is it to be misdiagnosed for genital warts?  I was advised that I "may" have it (he didn't offer any treatment and advised that I can see a dermatologist).  I was also told by my doctor that It can stay dormant for many years and that using a condom will usually protect you from it, however there is a slight chance that you can still become infected, even if using a condom.  Either way I will probably get a second opinion from a dermatologist but I wanted some additional feedback, hence the question.

That is what I was thinking also.  He riled me up a little, because I'm not familiar with genital warts and prior to being monogamous I used condoms religiously (kinda of a oxymoron i know) so when he said genital warts without giving another possibility I'm I'm thinking wtf.  That being said I'll be visiting my derm.

The Dr probably reffered you, offered no medication and said 'may' because he wasn't 100% sure, therefore don't take his diagnosis as a definitive and get a second opinion. If needed, get the 'warts' biopsied to figure out if it is HPV or something else. It could be something like a skin tag so a second opinion is definitely the way to go in my opinion
