HPV question

I have tested positive for HPV, the one that causes cervical cancer. I am having a LEEP procedure in June to get rid of abnormal cells on my cervix. Warts have never been evident.

My question is: What is the likelihood of a man contracting this from me if we always use condoms, but include mutual oral sex in our intimacy? Neither of us drink or smoke, and lead extremely healthy lifestyles-diet, exercise, etc.

Thank you.

How interesting, I'm studying at the moment, hoping to get into STD/HIV counseling! Sounds like the type of high risk HPV you have isn't serious. It can either be at a very progressed stage or just at the start so lucky you've caught it early. You should be fine just as long as you carry on what you are doing

Hi Amie,

Thanks so much for your answer! I'm very well versed in STD's in general-I've been a state certified HIV/AIDS testing counselor for a long time-the HPV thing is new to me, though. No sweat on continuing the healthy lifestyle-it's a part of who I am. I've got a great doctor, and we've got our 'plan.' The LEEP procedure, and then checkups ever 3 to 6 months for the next year....great to know that it generally works it's way out of the system as well.

If anyone else has anything they'd like to share, I'd love to hear from you! Thanks again, Amie!

Warts are associated with low risk HPV, and you have high risk HPV, so you don't have to worry about developing warts.

The risk of passing it on to a partner via protected sex is almost 100% but no method is completely protective (unless you refrain from sex altogether!). Passing it on via oral sex is also a very low risk in general when it comes to STD's. HPV is very unlikely orally.

As long as you keep up your healthy life style, and continue monitoring your paps then you should be okay, most people get rid of the virus in 2 years, though it can spontaneously pop up at any time.

Also, high risk HPV doesn't seem to affect men as much as it affects women, because the male genital cancers it can lead to are very uncommon.
