Married 36 years

My wife has had routine PAP smears with normal results. Two years ago she developed twenty plus warts in and around the lips of her vagina. She went to her Ob/gyn, when she returned she said he said it was nothing to worry about. She went back to the Doctor monthly and after six months or so they disappeared, but she want explain or tell me anything the Doctor told her.
Long story short we now know she has aSTD. My question is can it lay dormant 36 years?

I've searched and read comments all over, this Q&A is copied from another post.

"Q1. After exposure to HPV, how long will it take to see symptoms?
A. Most HPV infections cause no symptoms at all, however when they do, warts usually appear a few weeks up to 3 months after catching HPV, but sometimes warts may first appear many months or even a few years after catching the virus. Therefore, the appearance of warts doesn't always mean recent sex with an infected partner. "

By reading this "a few years" doesn't add up to 36 years, so I believe the exposure took place a few weeks to a few years before the warts appeared. If this is wrong I'd be happy to be corrected.

Rarely do genital warts go away by themselves. Esp after 6 months. If she had a procedure performed and didn't tell you, then she lied. Why would she lie about this? She has to know that you would get warts too and would figure out the source (her). So based on this, you should assume they weren't warts because she cannot be that naive to think you wouldn't get warts like she did. I am sure her doctor would have asked her to talk to you about looking for warts. Since its been 2.5 years since you saw some bumps down there and the average duration is 3-9 months from exposure to show warts, you should believe her and move on.

After much discussion she says she had "Lichen Selerosus" and "Sebaceous Cyst" , when I looked these up they look nothing like what she had. Is this possible or not. Would just like to know the truth.

The odds of a dormant virus that long are very low. I've seen women on here post of a 20 year old relapse but 36 years is very long. The odds are always MUCH better it is from a recent (3-9 months) exposure.

Yes, I am male, faithfully married to my wife for over 33 years.  I have been fighting anal warts for more than 2 years now, which I never had before.  I certainly agree that one can question whether a spouse has been unfaithful in a situation like this. My understanding is that it's got a lot to do with your immune system.
