The PAP is very useful because it detects changes to the cervix that may lead to cancer.
HPV is usually not a problem. Nearly everybody gets it, and few have serious problems. It can't be cured with medicine, but usually goes away on its own. This is especially true for younger women. It is often recommended that women over 30 get an HPV test along with the PAP.
If your PAP comes up positive, then it is time to start paying attention. Otherwise, nothing that needs to be done.
Well I do feel foolish for not knowing that HPV does now show up in pap smears, it almost seems unnecessary to get one now, what DO pap smears look for besides cervical cancer an changes caused by already having HPV, geez. I would assume that the wart came from your ex-bf via skin-to-skin. I must admit I am becoming very enthralled by sexual health myself, hence why I joined the forums. I to have dismissed a bump and now I am becoming more and more concerned by it. I hope everything works out for you.
The more I read about HPV, the more I am confused and a bit obsessed with it. So how do women test for HPV? And how do I find out what strand of HPV I have?
Thanks alexdelong!
The pap does not test for HPV at all.
It tests for changes caused by HPV.
So many people with cervical HPV infections have normal PAPs. Their infections are asymptotic.
If you have an HPV infection somewhere other than the cervix, it won't be picked up by the pap.
Does the pap smear check for all forms of HPV? All my results were normal before I stopped having sex for 2 years, so it could only be that one encounter with my ex-bf...
"It wouldn't do any good anyway" to try to figure out which partner gave me the HPV.
I agree it's too late anyway, the only thing I could do now is treat it and keep myself from spreading it to others. But at the same time, I just can't understand how I got it. We were careful about using a condom each time, and never had anal sex.
There is no way to trace the infection. It wouldn't do any good anyway.
Also, when I was on the 2 year sexual hiatus, I have had normal pap smear results, and no signs of genital warts. It wasn't until I had sex with my ex-bf that it appeared, though we've used protection, and didn't even cuddle naked afterward. I had my pap smear today, and will have to wait for the results, but my doctor had confirmed that I have a genital wart :(
