Hello! A year and half ago i had a hysteractomy. A cyst was also detected on my left ovary, but by the time I went to my gyno he couldn't see it so my ovaries were left alone. About a year after my surgery I started feeling discomfort on my lower left pelvic area. I guessed it was my ovaries again but chose to ignore, but pain continued to get worst. After about 4 months of this I decided to go to my gyno, the pain was already hard to handle and had travelled to my right side. (and although this is so ambarrassing, after the surgery i've had sooooo much gas its not even funny. I did tell my dr this, but I swear I was not like this before.) After an ultrasound he said I had a cyst about 11cm large. (Inside my head im thinking well maybe this is the cause of my gas) He couldnt tell me if it was coming from my ovaries because it was covering my entire pelvic area so I had a ct scan done. which revealed "mass" 14.5cm by 11cm which appeared to have "walls in between" and a collection of fluid around my pelvic area. I was very hesitant about surgery again so I had an aspiration of the cysts done. The pain was horrible (due to scarring from prev surgery), I wished I had had surgery instead, at least I would have been asleep To top it off they were only able to drain only one cyst because apparently the "middle" section of the mass had ruptured.(which explains my severe pain) and the other "mass'' they werent able to drain because it appeared solid or thick liquid. My dr said i still needed surgery and had a laparoscopy done. He removed a cyst on my right ovary and liquid collected down my vaginal area. He couldn't find my left ovary at all, he doesn't know why, and he didn't want to "open me up just to look for a lost ovary" his words. and he didn't see the "solid mass" the radiologist was talking about. He wants to do another ct to look for my lost ovary, in the mean time I still have pain on my left side, but he said it was probably gas, which i honestly do not think it is. All cancer tests and biopsies have come back cancer free which is GREAT!!!! But i'm still concerned about my pain, the cysts i keep getting and my lost ovary.
My question, should I be concerned about my "lost" ovary and what about this pain that just won't to away?
First off I hope you feel well soon, I must share with you that I went through almost the same....I had a hyster in 05 due to severe andeomyosis ( like bad endo a very heavy uterus) a year later yup cysts on left ovary atttached to bowel with new endo tissue( they had missed some) so I had to have ovary removed I choose to have healthy ovary removed too, did not want to face another possible surgery and its very difficult to detect ovarian cancer until later stages with out a uterus.
so basically anyone should be concerned when any body part is removed, the good news your young, in theory the remaining ovary should take over function of the lost one..like when a person has oe kidney removed the remaining does work of two. If your not obese, not a smoker and have no history of ovarian cancer this very much decreases risk of remaining ovary gettting cancer.
Im very glad and know your happy all tests found no cancer,,I think you should interview one more surgeon because your surgeon could not "find" two things ....uncommon
Pain is always the bodies way of saying something is wrong and free flowing fluid in the pelvic cavity is not a good thing. I agree 100 % with your thought that it is not trapped gas, and all the feeling of gas from the beginning yet a symptom not the cause.
so to sum up your questions You need not worry about the removed ovary but yes be concerned about the pain dont ignore it and use minimal pain meds as they only mask pain and until you get a diagnosis you could mask something serious like a rupture,,,,its possible to not even feel one if on enough meds......I would highly recommened seeing another gyn surgeon and getting his/her thoughts....If you have another surgery and it sounds likely you should try very hard to insist on a Laproscopic not a pelvic cut...DaVinci Robotic assisted is the best method.
