Do hysterectomies cause ovarian cysts???

I had a TAH on 10/03/08.  I had had 3 vertical c-sections and was having severe pain and bleeding along with anemia. When they did the hysterectomy they found that I had bad adhesions and that my bladder was stuck to my uterus which was stuck up to the right to my abdomen.  I was in the hospital 4 days and kept having to be recatheterized as my bladder just wouldn't work.  The pathology report said it was adenomyosis.

I've been having lower left sided pain for weeks and have called the Dr 2 to 3 times.  They didn't seem too concerned.  The pain got extreme in the last few days and I stuck it out till my 4 week post-op yesterday.  I knew something bad was wrong and told him so before he checked.  He found a "golf ball size cyst" on my right ovary and said the right one is polycystic.  What???  I had 2 ultrasounds before surgery months apart from each other and my ovaries were perfect!

Now what?  Do hysterectomies cause this because I hadn't seen or heard anything about this before surgery.  Maybe I should have had them out too.  He was so "nonchalant" and rough that I'm still angry with my Dr.

Any info?  Thanks

Thanks for the support, saw the DR Fri and he wanted to do surgery right then.  I was so overwhelmed I just burst into tears.  We scheduled it for Mon because it had gotten so much larger and so much more painful.  But....on Mon am I woke up with no pain and no tennis ball lump.  Needless to say I didn't have surgery but he did say "don't be surprised if your back on Thurs.  I am in a wait and watch mode.  My husband found something interesting online that said Drs should be doing hysterectomies AFTER ovulation and not just before.  I know I ovulated about 1 week after surgery.
Thank again all,
Lisa

Hi Laney!  You're just one of the old gals on the block now here eh!  Good job!!!

Lisa.... Yechhhhh..... I feel so sorry for you.  You must be really frustrated and confused.  I would be.  OK... don't panic.  Maybe the cysts are even gone by now!  They do come and go, both before and after a hyster.
You DEFINITELY need a new doctor.  For one thing, polycystic is a red flag... you need some testing if you suspect PCOS  (helllooooo if it is PCOS they should have caught it before now, jeeez).  Are you diabetic?
I don't think the hyster would have caused cysts but who the heck knows??
Get a second opinion.  DEMAND some investigating.
Hoping you get some answers and feel better soon.

I think I too would get another opinion. He seems like he can't make up his mind as to what to do. This will all get better, promise. It is just so hard at times. I know, I have been there too.

Thanks for the feedback.  He put me on something called prometrium, said it's supposed to shrink them.  The interesting thing is he must be concerned about my unhappiness as he called a few days ago.  Now he wants to also put me on birth control pills which I find even more concerning as he said before surgery that they were not an option because of my age - 45.
I'm so confused and disappointed with him I think it's time for a second opinion. I'm really wishing I hadn't had surgery at all.

Hi there,
Sorry you are having such pain and misery. It is no fun. I have never heard that a hysto can cause cysts. Since you still have your ovaries, you can absolutely make cysts though. Did he say what type of cyst it was? Did he order a transvaginal ultrasound?
If not, I would want one. That can at least kind of catagorize the cyst. Most will resolve themselves within a cycle or two. They usually watch to see if there is any change in size or shape. I take it that you are premenopausal. They are very common in premenopausal women. I hope this helps. Keep us posted. I had a hysto/bso/appy 3 weeks ago. I didn't have an option of leaving my ovaries as I had suspicious masses on both. So it all came out. I am doing great now, but I tell ya, surgical menopause is no picnic. I am 45 and was still premenopausal. I started hormone replacement at the begining of this week and I feel 100% better....
Take comfort in knowing that 95% of cysts are benign and resolve...
Take care and let us know how you make out....or if you have other questions...
