How ironic to find this subject today. I just joined and was seeking info about results from a pap/exam I had a couple of weeks ago. I had a vaginal hysterectomy very long ago, apparently one of the first or the first the Dr. had ever done. (1978 or 9, I think). Many years later I had surgery to repair damage & lesions from the surgery. Since then, I have not had an exam, thinking there was no need. Well, my Dr. disagreed & thought I should get checked occasionally. I did. Results are atypical glandular cells were found, of cervical origin! I am being sent to an OB/GYN to have another exam & whatever is to be done with the cells. Dr. had never heard of such a thing, but there they are!? Message: Get an exam done, at least once in awhile!
I've heard various things, but what will always stick with me is this: Years ago during a normal pap smear appointment (when I had all of my body parts) the doctor said that sadly women think that after a hysterectomy they don't need a pap smear. Her concern was Vaginal cancer (not as common but something to be vigilant about checking). I have a pap smear once a year since my radical hysterectomy. I have heard a recommendation of two years, too.
I had everything removed in 2000.

My doctor stated that if you have no cervix, you don't need a pap smear. If you have a cervix left, that has to be checked yearly.
Hope this helps.
