Surgical Menopause & Estrogen Patch

Hi,

I'm 37 and I've had a whole list of complications when it came to female issues. I had a partial hysterectomy in 2006 due to a prolapsed uterus. In 2008, I develop a hemorrhagic cyst on my left ovary. It grew to the size of a grape fruit and relocated to where my uterus use to be, attached itself to my abdominal wall, bladder, and bowel. I was on blood thinners at the time (warfarin) because of a DVT, and my doctors believe that the cyst was the cause of the DVT because it sat on the arteries and slowed the blood flow to the left leg.

In 2010, I had bladder surgery to repair a prolapse. The surgeon found and removed a 7cm cyst on my last remaining ovary (the right). By June of 2010, I had create another. I was symptomatic with this one and the cyst was large enough (they never told me the size) that it started to prolapse the bladder again.

My Gyn and I decided enough was enough. I was going to continue to make these large cyst and they couldn't keep going in and removing them. Last week, my Gyn went in and removed the cyst and the ovary. This cyst did something similar to the left but it was less severe. It had also attached itself to my abdominal wall, bladder, and bowels and had to be cut free.

My Gyn discussed estrogen supplements with me and she said she felt comfortable giving them to me. She also felt extra comfortable because I still had the vena cava filter that was put in in 2008 prior to removing that hemorrhagic cyst. She said that if a blood clot was ever to develop from the estrogen, I would have some protection.

I opted for the patch because I'm on so many pills already for an undiagnosed neurological condition. She said that I would have a period of 3 weeks of adjustment because I'm going from a higher dosage from what my ovary put out, to a lower dosage. I was put on the 10 estrogen patch.

Does anyone have experience on the estrogen patch Vivelle-Dot, and if so did you like it? How long was your adjustment period if you had surgical menopause and was put on an estrogen supplement? I do have, what I believe might be mild hot flashes..I feel like I'm hot and I'm running a fever but I'm not. Thank you for your input :)

Hi, Your on the same medication they put me on after my hysterectomy, I had no problems at all with it, remember to atlernate sides when you use it and to apply to level above pelvic line but below belly button.

I like many others had post hyster menopausal symptoms of hot flahes and night sweats,
it took about two weeks for body to adjust from the trauma of the sudden menopause and the medicine to work, it did my symptoms where gone, stayed on med for a year then discontinued, I only have rare hot flashes now.

You have been through so much, definatley the right decision to have ovaries removed, sometime we never will know the reason but those darn cysts just keep coming back.
the reason they attached to your organs was probably endometrosis tissue.
