Upcoming surgery

WOW!  I am almost 49 years old with four grown children and six grandchildren....  I made a commitment to myself and my significant other during the first of the year that I was going to quit smoking and be healthier at 50 than I was at 40.  Today, June 2, 2008, I got the news that I have to have a hysterectomy because of severe complication casused by fibroid tumors.  I have a work related back injury in which I have been at home since 2001 recovering (no surgery to date because of this) and my doctors have given me the green light to return to work on a part-time basis.  I'm scheduled to return to work on June 9, 2008 but  today, I'v been given this bombshell!  I am unsure how to deal with all of this!  How long should I expect to be recovering from the hysterectomy?  How intense is the pain?  I was told that I will be in the hospital for 4 days, is this accurate?  I'm going for a second opinion tomorrow (6/3/08) and hopefully she will be able to provide me with some insight... but what questions should I ask her about the procedure since I am pretty certian  that if she concurs with the previous diagnosis, she will be performing the surgery.  Please help me!

Hello what2think, :)

I just had a full hysterectomy April 18th 6 1/2 weeks ago and I'm 45 years old.  I have on my page all my issue's if you'd like to go to my page and catch up.  I WILL TELL YOU seeing as you were cleared to go back to work and seem to really want to that I would DEFINATELY FIND OUT if a daVinci Hysterectomy is available anywhere around you.  It's the least invasive procedure for surgery and girl.....I will tell you I was COMPLETELY SHOCKED at how well I did.  I never needed pain pills afterwards, but did take them at night to make sure I could sleep.  I was more sore than anything no real pain.  If you can handle being sore after exercising that's what it was like for me.  The recovery is SO MUCH BETTER.  Some women go back to work 2-4 weeks after surgery.  It really depends on you and your job.

I hope you're able to have this daVinci method done it's robotic.  You can actually see a video about it on HysterSisters website.  There are SO MANY ONLINE SUPPORT GROUPS with information it's GREAT!!!

Keep us posted and can't wait to hear what you find out.

Blessings to you.  Sharon :)

Sorry to hear about your sickness. I am 35 and don't have children. It seems that those who have children and have this done don't experience pain the same way. I had a hyst. (uterous removed only) on May 14th. I had a 12 cm uterine fibroid that was causing pressure and cramping problems. I also had some endo.  the pain was worse than I thought it would be. I did not seem to have proper pain medication. I have problems with hydrocodone so I received other medication. I did not have a pain pump. The first several days are rough. I managed to get a UTI which complicated things. I think the majority of my pain was related to my bladder. It does hurt to move like to sit up and stand up but after you get up and start walking it gets better. Then you have to sit down again and the pain repeats itself :). I still wake up (3 weeks post op) with a burning pain. I don't know if this is related to my bladder or incisional pain. I am still taking antibiotics for the e. coli and pseudomnas. I started walking this week and feel very stiff all over. Your back will probably ache because it hurts to stand up straight, kind of hunched over. My doc told me I could start doing some exercise. I wanted to smack him. It takes anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks. My doc told me I could drive after week number 4. Yeah. Everyone tells me this is well worth it. I feel like I have a dull ache, probably my bladder.

It depends on whether your surgery is going to be done laporascopically or with open surgery (laporotomy).  Due to the length of stay I would suspect they are doing open surgery.  I am having the same on June 6 and have been told that I will be off work anywhere between 4 weeks and 8 weeks depending upon how I recover.  There is significant pain involved but after the first 2 weeks should lighten up considerably.

Do visit www.hystersisters.com.  There is some great info there that you will find helpful.  Good luck and so sorry you're having to go through this.

All the best,
Trudie
