breast and hysterectomy

After having stage 1 hormone receptive breast cancer (Jan. 07) I have had a D&C (due to bleeding)in Jan. of 08. Now after having bled again for 16 days (while on vacation in Fla.), my endrometrial lining is thicker than normal and I have decided on a supra - hysterectomy. Two cancer drs. have advised the surgery...my gyn. dr. thinks an ablation would be a better choice. Please help me understand what would be the better decision.

Well Good Luck first of all. That is great that your husband will be taking care of you after your surgery. Do you know if your having the laparotomy (open surgery) or a laparoscopy? (the small incisions and vaginal removal of the uterus) As far as infections go, I am a nurse and the best thing that health care workers can do is WASH THEIR HANDS. Don't be afraid to ask if they washed their hands or used the hand sanitizers...it is perfectly acceptable. You too should wash your hands. They need to use alcohol prior to putting anything into your iv port. Im sure they will, but that is a couple of biggies to prevent infection. As soon as you are able and feel well enough, go home. You are much less likely to get an infection there...
Good luck to you, and Im sure you will do fine. Keep us posted and you are in my prayers...God Bless

Yeah, thanks for the vote of confidence. My surgery is 7:30 am Tues.....tomorrow. I am pretty nervous. It is weird...I am worried most about staph infections. Any suggestions?

Hi Maylou,
I would definitely have the hysto if you are post menopausal and continue to bleed.
When are you going to have it done? Have you decided that is the route you will take?

Hi there,
I think I would listen to the oncologists on this one. They are more the experts. How old are you? Are you pre or post menopausal. Sometimes its easier to answer questions when we know how old you are. Let us know.
