help I need answers

I am going to have a hysterectomy next month and I was just wondering, Is it true that you will bleed up to 6 weeks and can not drive, lift or do much of anything? I will know in a few weeks about what kind of hysterctomy I am going to have, but I been hearing alot of things about it.

Overall, hyster has been a positive thing for me.  My 6 wk checkup is this afternoon.  I was so tired of "hygiene issues" for years before having the rectocele/cystocele repair done at the same time.  Fibroids were the main reason for the hyster.  Plus cyst on right ovary... it all added up to getting it done and over with, and I am glad I did. I have one ovary left intact.  I feel like a burden has been lifted off my body and the rectocele repair has been a tremendous change for the better.  Recovery is easier for me since dr was able to do surgery vaginally.  I had a couple days of being teary-eyed after about 2 wks and they changed my HRT from .01 to .1 mg Vivelle and that went away.  I was a little crabby but everyone is crabby in Michigan in January.

I did not experience "bleeding" after the surgery, just a light discharge that lasted 3-4 weeks.  Panty liners took care of it.  You need to be off work 3-4 weeks depending on whether it is vaginal or abdominal.  Rest is essential!  But you will be able to move around and do a few things after one week.  It isn't good to lie on the couch all the time, either, but you have to have a lot of patience in settling for doing just a "little" or you will get really tired.  Standing still is the worst... it was uncomfortable and I was better off moving around a bit.   I went back to work half days after 3 weeks, which was ok, but I took it easy.  Then full days the 4th week.  No lifting or straining.  I had no problem driving a car after 3 weeks.

It requires patience, taking care of yourself, eating right, and knowing life will return to some semblance of normal.  I gained two pounds, but that's just from inactivity and I will slowly increase moving around more.  Brownies also look good in January...

OK of course by reading that one post it isn't changing our minds. I've read the pros and cons of Hysterectomies and I am still going to go through with it.

Tjoyce - I've been in pain and had painful heavy bleeding periods for years and I am finished with this once and for all. I have problems with cysts and Endo. This surgery needs to be done so I can finally live pain free and worry free. The majority of the women I have talked to that has had hysterectomies tell me that they don't regret it. I've heard more positive than negative :-)

I was told to have a hysterectomy by my gyno and found the HERS website and so far, 2 years later, I am still intact and no problems.  I would suggest that before you take any chances of experiences any of these post hysterectomy issues, check out the HERS website, it's easy to find, www.HERS.org and you can schedule a consultation to get a second opinion.  Especially after reading all of your posts claiming all sorts of problems post hysterectomy, I am very glad I call the Hers foundation first.  Good luck, but don't say I didn't tell you so.
