small fibroid, big changes

I am 42, and for the last 3-4 months my periods have been frequent (15-19 days apart) heavy (a tampon every hour, clotty, crampy, and very painful. I have also had a frequent sharp pain between my right ovary and my hip. My ultrasound showed a "small hypoechoic fibroid along the anterior fundal/body junction, abutting the endometrial stripe, consistant with a submucosal lesion." I don't know what that means, so I don't know if it explains the sharp pain or not? Could perimenopause explain the ridiculously frequent and disruptive periods? Does the fibroid need to come out, or is it too small to bother with? And for crying out loud, why am I suddenly so cranky???? I hate these moods!

Fibroids have growth stages and then they start shrinking once you hit menopause. You may want to have your Estrogen levels checked. Soy products cause excessive estrogen production which causes fibroids to grow. I did not know this and before I had my Hysterectomy I was drinking a lot of protein shakes that contained Soy. If only I would have done more research before making such a permanent life altering decision. I would not be suffering from the horrible side effects such as loss of sexual desire and chronic neuropathic pain.

Thank you so much for answering! I'm a little concerned about hormone replacement because I had a pulmonary embolism when I was young, and a few TIA's later, probably because of birth control hormones. I even had to take Lovenox (shots in the belly) twice a day during my last pregnancy, which was scary and miserable. I think they would have to find a perfect balance, if that's possible.

I would certainly talk to your doctor about seeing if there is anything that can be done about the periods. My mom went through really heavy periods, had the uterus scraped. That didn't work so they did a hysterectomy. I would suggest talking to your doctor and seeing if any type of birth control could help lessen the periods. I know I'm young but I did get 3 periods a month and really really heavy ones for a few months until i finally got on a different birth control pill.  It's just an option to think about.
I would also ask about checking your hormone levels just to make sure everything is okay with those.
Good luck!
