I will try to report to the FDA today. Thank you.
I think this incident should be reported.
I would contact the the appropriate authority (FDA?) and file a complaint against Medco and the supplier of this (probably) generic Metformin HCL.
If this happened to you, more people are going through the same thing.
Glad that your doctor caught this. Thank your lucky stars!
Take care.
Niko
I went to the doctor yesterday. When I got my colonoscopy my meds changed and I was being treated for diabetes. Metformin HCL 500mg was prescribed by my doctor. When I took all the meds in that I were taking she only opened up this Metformin and smelled it. She told me to smell it and it smelled like amonia. I never paid any attention to its smell. Doctor told me it was not the real metformin and the binders (chalk) used in it was probably causing me to have IBS. At the beginning of my visit she wanted me to see a GI doctor but after this she instructed me not to take anymore of this medication. She has giving me a new prescription for same med. I got the old prescription filled through Medco Mail Order pharmacy. I won't do that again. My doctor also told me it wouldn't do any good to try to get a refund. I will be call Medco today because this has really cost me. .
Hi Angel041062.
Why did you get a colonoscopy?
Please describe your symptoms before this procedure, a brief medical history including stress, anxiety, past traumas/surgeries/infections, age, diet, fitness levels, current medications etc.
Take care.

Hi, its unlikely that a colonoscopy can trigger episodes of IBS. You can check to rule out bowel infections like amoebiasis, this can cause bowel movements soon after a meal. Amoebiasis is an infection of the intestines and it is treated with metronidazole. Other common causes are malabsorbtion and indigestion. These can be diagnosed by stool examination. So, check with your doctor to rule out these conditions.
If no cause is detected then your symptoms could be due to IBS. Try lifestyle measures they help to reduce the severity of symptoms. Stop becoming over anxious and practice relaxation techniques. Exercise, go for long relaxed walks. Avoid those foods which you feel are increasing your symptoms. Stop smoking, eliminate alcohol consumption, and avoid caffeinated beverages and spicy food. Regards.
