The other kidney should 99.9% be safe. It is a scary situation to go through but being informed is the best thing you can do. The situation we have right now is that our sons kidney did not shrink over the 1st yr of his life so now they are suggesting we should have it removed. Now while it is a surgery we risk more of a chance hurting him while driving him to the doc office than allowing him to do the surgery. He has shown no signs of discomfort or any other issues but since there is a slight chance that issues may arise later in life with a small chance it could turn cancerous or continue to grow and the side effects from that would be back pain and vomiting. So to avoid the possibilities of him having issues later in life we have decided to have the operation performed. Since the kidney is not functioning and serves no purpose because of the MCDK we find no reason to run the risk of having issues with it later in life. God willing your sons will shrink and he will live a very healthy and normal life. Just remember you may want to consider keeping him away from contact sports to avoid possible injury to the good kidney. If there is any other info I can share with you please let me know. God Bless you and your family and I wish you the best.
