Hi,
The enzyme ALT (alanine aminotransferase) or serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT) is primarily found in the liver, making it a more specific test for detecting liver abnormalities.
This enzyme is involved in the metabolism of the amino acid alanine. If there is injury to the liver, there is a release of the enzyme into the blood. Normal range can vary according to a number of factors, including age and gender. Normal range is 5-35 IU/L. In your case, an increased SGPT levels may indicate: Celiac disease, cirrhosis, Hepatitis (viral, autoimmune), effects of certain medications or even liver ischemia . Talk to your doctor about your result for proper management. Results may also vary from different laboratories.
Take care and keep us posted.
