Fatty Liver

This is not regarding a transplant but I hope you won't mind me asking this because a family member has been diagnosed with a fatty liver.  He is overweight, about 40lbs. and drinks beer (about four) per day.  I am very worried because he seems to be in denial since he was told.  I know someone who went this direction and ended up with pancreatitis.  Can you please tell me what blood tests he should get and maybe what foods to stay away from or something/  His doctor only told him to lose weight and nothing else.  Oh he did put him on a statin drug for high triglycerides but no blood work.  The fatty liver was found by an ultrasound.  Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Thank you for your response.  We had fish and veggies for dinner tonight and today is the second day without beer.  Your response backed me up in what I have been telling him and I appreciate you.  You have helped us change our lifestyle.

if he can lose weight the fatty liver can totaly resolve.  This much alcohol use can be additive to the liver damage to fatty liver and can also contribute to further weight gain.  he must change his life style as in some cases fatty liver can result in cirrhosis.
