Pneumothorax Please he Im scared..
Im not sure if anyone could help me but Im scared and hopefully someone will know some stuff about this......I had a Catscan done for something else and they found I have Pneumothrax means collspe of the lung. Had no symptons of it. Im shocked. I had to go to the ER and the did a XRAY and they said it was a small one. 10-15 percent of my right lung. I went the next day got another XRAY and it got smaller. My quiestion is does anyone know this goes away on its own or it could get larger? Any advise would help me so Ill feel better. Like I said I have no symptoms of this..Is it dangerous........
I have another quiestion I know your not a doctor but you seem like you know some of this. Tension pneumothorax I know thai is lifr threating. If someone gets pneumothorax do they have a risk of getting Tension pneumothorax.......I was reading a little about it and I got a little nervous....That is serious...... Can a pneumothorax turn into the tension one?

I saw the doctor and she said it decreased in size... I have to see a spealist and he can tell me everything about pneumothrax she did explain some of it.. 30% I will get another one. That is low and she is happy Im quiting smoking and I will be getting another XRAY in a year. Do you know if I never gotten a catscan I wouldnt even know I have it. Funny........Im glad Im going to be fine......

I agree it's a good sign that they let you go home. That probably means that it has gotten smaller.

I got my catscan done they let me go home so that is a good sign....Ill know more tomorrow and Ill post back thank you so much for being here for me. I was really scared....
Yes, pneumothorax is the medical term for a collapsed lung (or more technically, air in the pleural space resulting in a collapsed lung).
You probably aren't experiencing any symptoms because yours is small (less than 20%) and there is only a small amount of air in the pleural space. I'm not a doctor, so it also seems strange to me that you wouldn't have any symptoms. I mean, you'd think a collapsed lung would be something you'd notice, right? But I guess it's not unusual for a simple spontaneous pneumothorax to be asymptomatic and to heal on it's own without treatment.
I know how scary these medical things can be, so I'm glad you feel I've helped a bit. I'll keep checking back here to see how you're doing.

Pneumothorax is a collection of air outside of the lung in the chest cavity or pleural space that causes part or all of a lung to collapse. There are several different types of pneumothorax, ranging from those that are small and require no treatment to those that are life threatening emergencies, but usually fall somewhere in between the two extremes.
Pneumothorax that occurs for no obvious reason is called spontaneous pneumothorax. It's caused when a small sac in the lung ruptures. Simple spontaneous pneumothorax often occurs in tall, thin men under the age of 40, but also may be brought on by activity in otherwise healthy people or may occur during scuba diving or air travel. Complicated spontaneous pneumothorax occurs in people with lung disease.
Tension pneumothorax is due to serious trauma to the chest such as a car accident, stabbing, gun shot, fractured rib that punctures the lung, etc., certain medical procedures that allow air into the chest cavity, and people with a long history of lung disease. Tension pneumothorax occurs when the lung collapses completely and presses on the heart. The collapsed lung pushes the heart and its blood vessels to the other side of the chest, and the heart cannot pump normally.
I do know someone who had this ~ my best friend ~ but his lung was completely collapsed and was much more serious that what you have. He went to the hopsital for pneumonia and the collapsed lung, and while he was there he was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. I'm sorry to say, he died within 3 weeks of his diagnosis.
I want to make it very clear that he didn't die because of the collapsed lung, so please don't worry. Yours isn't anything like what he had. But I am glad to hear that you are taking this experience as your body's way of sending you an early warning to quit smoking. I quit smoking the day my best friend went to the hospital, before he was even diagnosed with lung cancer. I decided right then that I would quit and I haven't touched a cigarette since. That was February 2, 2006. There are many good aids available to help you quit smoking, and I think people should use whatever they need to help. But remember the best thing is your own will and determination. Nothing works without it.

Oh 1 more thing..... Is it all different pneumothrax or are they the same? Im sorry for asking you ?? you seem like you know alot.Do you know people who had this and they are fine???
You're probably right about the cause ~ people who smoke cigarettes are at a much greater risk of suffering a pneumothorax, and the risk goes up the more you smoke ~ even if you have no known underlying lung disease.
Since you have only a small, partial collapse and you had no symptoms, there's a good chance that, with the proper care, it will heal on it's own. However, it is possible for it to worsen, especially if you aren't taking care of yourself (i.e.: not resting, continuing to smoke, etc.). Usually, if it does get worse, you will experience some symptoms such as shortness of breath or chest pain, but it is possible that you still won't have any symptoms, so it's important to keep your follow up appointments. A large collapse left untreated can become extremely serious. If you do start to experience symptoms, or if you find out at your follow up that it has gotten worse, you will likely need to have the air removed from the chest so that the lung can re-expand.

Depending on the cause and the size, it can be dangerous and they often require hospitalization. But yours is small and it already getting even smaller, so it's likely to resolve on its own without any treatment.
Did the doctor schedule a follow up appointment for you? I would imagine that if the doctor thought yours was very serious, you would have already received treatment for it or they would have admitted you into the hospital.
The lung should re-expand itself in a few days once the trapped air is out of the chest cavity. You can help by getting plenty of rest, and keeping your head elevated with pillows. And try not to cough.
