Swampy's soapbox -- coffee

Welcome to Swampy's soapbox, a semi-regular feature where Swampy passionately advocates controversial opinions.on a variety of very important topics.

This episode's topic: coffee.

Coffee is all about water, beans, motion, and temperature. The idea is simple, you pass water over roasted ground beans and you get something that is absolutely delicious. It doesn't matter how you pass water over it (though, Swampy supposes, its better if it only passes over it once),

All those fancy coffee maker thingies are nothing more than some marketing yahoo's attempt to get your money. You just need something that heats up the water to the right temperature, and can be cleaned.

Too many people don't use enough coffee grounds. You should always make coffee with about 2T grounds per cub. That will taste stronger than most people make it, and if you need it weaker, add a little hot water. This is much better than making a weaker coffee.

Clean your coffeemaker! Most people make this mistake, the oil from the coffee will stick to your coffeemaker and go rancid. The result is that your coffee will never taste quite right.

People put too much stuff into coffee. Good coffee doesn't need additives. Maybe some spices, but sugar just makes it taste sweet, and milk just adds to your waistline. Non dairy creamer will keep you from decaying after you die, which depending on your religion might be an issue.

Next soapbox: Why Swampy keeps spoiled milk in his refrigerator.

So, I went out and bought some Dunkin Donuts Cinnamon Spice coffee (since it was so highly rated here!) and my son stuck his nose up in the air and said at least Starbucks doesn't use artificial flavoring in their coffee. Hee hee. He's so loyal to his company! I think he was a bit put out that I bought Dunkin Donuts!

Dunkin Donuts is great.  Starbuck's...ewww.  Too heavy and doesn't taste good.

I'm a coffee drinker.  My parents were too.  Chances are, if you visit my home, you will smell this aroma in the air.  Regular in the morning and deacf. at night.  It seems this is the only thing I can drink that doesn't make me belch.

I love some of the fancy varities.  The best one I recall having was a cup of hazelnut with whip cream on top. Yummie.

Now...what's up with that milk in you fridge?  New science experiment?

You're the second person to say how good Dunkin Donuts coffee is. Does anyone remember Bip? I haven't seen her around for some time. Anyway, she works at Dunkin Donuts and said they have the best coffee.
I may have to try it. That cinnamon spice sounds good!

Anybody ever tried (or heard of (!?!) Berres Bros.? They make a yummy blend called Highlander Grog. Mine and dh's absolute favorite!!! Oh yeah, with some dry (so it doesn't make the coffee cold), non-dairy creamer.

I hate Starbuck's -- I find the taste of their coffee quite bitter.  My favorite is PJ's coffee in New Orleans -- now that is good coffee.  I grind my own beans, and I do like it with a little bit of heavy cream and cinnamon.

Kona's good, but my absolute favorite coffee is Dunkin' Donuts Cinnamon Spice!  I buy it at the grocery store, and the aroma when it's brewing is out of this world.  Best tasting coffee I've ever had!

I like Kona too! We only got to go to Hawaii once but if I go back again I'm bringing back some more Kona coffee and pineapple!

And for those wondering the Kona coffee you see in the stores is not the same as what you can get in Hawaii.

My son works at Starbucks so I've learned quite a bit about them. I'm actually impressed with how they try to be high quality and take the care they do with their coffees. Yes, I know it's expensive but it's soooo good.
My son has become quite the coffee conesuer (sp?) since he started working there. He only likes the high quality coffee now and went out and bought himself a french press because he said it makes the best coffee.

I cheat. I like the flavored coffees or lattes. Sorry! Just can't do the straight black! My son thinks I don't appreciate good coffee either! He's become a coffee snob at the ripe old age of 20! Lol.

ok..best way to clean coffee pot, use ice and salt a squirt of lemon juice if you have it, just add swirl around, and rinse well, no need for soap, gets glass pots crystal clean !!

I drink copious amounts of coffee, rarely without "garnishes." I have 4 different flavors of creamers in my fridge at this moment, splenda in the cupboard, and even some plain non-dairy creamer, both powdered and liquid in the fridge. A good balance of cream and sugar, to me, adds to a cup or coffee, it does not detracts.

I am a pot-a-day drinker, almost strong enough to chew. My dh likes lighter brews.

For some reason the only time I enjoy black coffee is around the campfire (made the old fashioned way).

Otherwise...I take a bit of coffee with my cream and sugar.

I know, I'm a sinner. :-)

I could never, and would never, do without my coffee!

I drink it medium to strong with a scoop of non dairy creamer... perked in my Mr coffee maker.

I use a regular coffeemaker in the morning, when Mr. Peek and I have coffee together.

Later in the day, if I want my own cup, I use my french press, which makes unbelievably good coffee.

WELL, I guess I would get tossed out to the curb. I do not like coffee. How I make coffee: Place a mug of water in microwave and heat for 1 minute. Remove carefully. Add 1 tsp.instant Maxwell House. To this add 2 packs Splenda or equivalent. Relax and enjoy. It's worked for 30 years, so must be good.

I hate Starbucks over priced fancy coffees! I am just as contented with regular ole instant Folgers done at home or put in a travel mug to work (lots of cream and two sugars)

Anybody try the new Thanksgiving Blend @ Starubucks yet?  It sounded rather "strong" for me ..... soooooooo I've passed.  Unfortunately, I'm all for the cream and the sugar and the flavored coffee .. now, tea, I can take it with just a bit of lemon.  Even honey works nicely in tea.

Ooops....tea will hijack this thread,  Sorry Swampy!

I was born and raised in West Texas, and the stronger the coffee the better. I use a Bunn coffeemaker, so I have hot water ready at all times. My husband tells me that he gets caffeined up after having a cup of my coffee, but after 35 years he's grown used to it. I have cousins in Louisiana and they like my coffee, almost as strong as chicory. My doctor tells me to lay off, but it's not that easy to do.

I grind my own beans here.  I love the dark roast blends.  Nothing added........My brother and i always share a half lb of Kona at xmas.  It is expensive but so damn worth it.  I do like Latte's with an extra shot of espresso.......

Spoiled milk???

I like a good robust strong coffee.  I always had it with sugar but for the last year have eliminated that but have not yet given up just a tsp. of low fat milk.  There are often arguments in our house over making the coffee.  My hubby likes to reuse the grounds from the day before and add a couple more scoops.  This grosses me out.  I believe in fresh new grounds each day.  I try to ensure I am up first so coffee is made my way.

I work with some coffee snobs (no offense directed).  When we are on the road I am very happy with the Canadian staple of Tim Horton's coffee (now available in the northeastern US) whereas my co-workers insist on their Starbuck's.  I only get regular coffee (not a simple task to ask for either) at Starbuck's and it doesn't taste as good as the regular coffee at Timmie's.

Coffee is an individual choice. Coffee should be strong in order to taste it properly, rather than color the hot water. I agree that good coffee needs nothing, it should never be "spoiled" by adding garnishes. Now that is coffee.

That said I love a good cup of latte, no flavor, with one exception "Pumpkin Spice." All these french vanillas, mocha supreme and yes even pumpkin spice are true not coffees. They are just a sweet drink with some coffee in it.

And Jacqui, your husband has got it right. That is the way coffee should be made.

And that's Tuck's 2 cents worth.
