I'm reading now that 4% of computers are infected with this worm !  They are saying that this worm has the ability to turn off antivirus defenses, so using your antivirus software won't be effective if your computer is infected.

One computer savy website was able to tell their members how to scan for the virus. They were able to do this because German researchers at the Honeynet Project have been able to fingerprint the malware on infected networks.

So this is where I'm heading next (and won't be purchasing stuff online for awhile... at least not until this worm issue is resolved)

It`s an ongoing thing, not just April 1st. Yep, it is infuriating. It is just like the toddler days. You build your sandcastle and sure as honey there will be some other kid stomping on it. There are builders and destroyers in the world. It starts that early.

Well, it seems we all survived April 1. I know I was sure concerned. I was not on that day, but then again, I was out of town, so did not have access to the computer, but, had I been home, I would not have turned it on.

I have all the security available, so, what will be will be, it just infuriates me how things like this get started and how folks can have the capability to ruin our things.

I seem to be able to access all the antivirus sites.  I downloaded the Pand thing to use for my stick drives.  I think I'm safe *knock on wood*.  I think I did download the update in October that fixed the vulnrability.

Only update I can't seem to do is the Win XP SP3 update.  I tried twice and both times left my computer a mess until I reverted back and undid the update.

I keep checking and making sure that I can access http://www.microsoft.com !  Yes... this person can give this sleeper cell virus further instructions and it could happen on another day. If your computer is infected and the hacker gives this virus further instructions..... then your identity and credit card (if you order anything online) info could be compromised.

Well no wonder why Bill Gates has put out a $250,000 reward for the person(s) responsible for this. We all know one thing about hackers.... they eventually like to brag ! I hope they catch this person !

My husband said it didn't matter if you turned your computer off for a day. If you have the bug, it would activate as soon as you turned it back on. We checked our anti-virus yesterday to make sure all was good. I'm not going to worry about it. Enough things to worry about in this world!

I took the excuse to have a computerless day. Virus or no, it's not like I would die if I didn't use my computer for a day.  Sometimes I need to prove that to myself.

This threat takes advantage of a known vulnerability in Windows RPC service.  A patch for this vulnerability was released by Microsoft back in October.

Keep your Windows operating systems up-to-date, and use reliable anti-virus software.  Many trustworthy security software companies offer a free version of their product.  Examples include Avast, and AVG.  If you are up-to-date, you are no more vulnerable now, than you were yesterday, or last week.

The problem that's being speculated here is simply that the virus is scheduled to use a new algorithm, connecting it to different domains.  It could potentially receive new instructions...  The part we are ignoring here is that it could have done this well before April 1st over a P2P network.  It could also do this anytime after April 1st.

There are tools available from Microsoft, Symantec, and others to help remove this worm.  If this applies to you, be sure to update your version of Windows after its removal.

So, I just heard on the news this may have been a world wide prank. It appears to be a no show, at least for now. My husband told me yesterday that with all the hype this thing was getting it's possible they will delay this thing. What do you all think?

I did hear about that late last night. So I went to http://www.microsoft.com (and fortunately was able to access it) and did a malware search. I didn't have any infected files.

They are now reporting that the person who did this may likely be getting information for spam. In any case, whatever the motive.... this is the second time that a hacker has planted a "sleeper cell" virus that awaits instructions. And it is frightening.

T/E has good advice, except about avoiding MH!

I definitely will avoid MH tomorrow... :)

Why is it all focused on April 1st I wonder? The Conficker Worm has been around for a while now and I read somewhere, it has already infected about 10 million computers. So that`s an ongoing thing.

Just don`t ever click on any links or open any attachments that don`t make any sense to you and don`t make the mistake I once made to reply to an email by your own bank or similar institution. It`s a trick, Once you reply, you are opening the gate to have malicious software stream into your system.
Also, I have made it a habit to delete mass emails from friends that come with attachments. Some of these funny jokes or chain letters that are being passed around only serve the purpose of multiplying the bug rapidly.
Finally, caution with USB memory sticks as well. Use your own only or if it is someone else`s, cancel the auto-run and check content and files separately.
Oh yeah, and don`t type any borderline questions into the google search, I once had to research how many people can be run through attractions of an amusement park, it involves the word "pulsing" - and man, the computer just went berserk with disgusting information and pop-ups.

Logging off now... You never know which time zone April 1st they meant.

Oh wow...I hadn't read that.  But, the way I understand it I don't think it really matters if you shut off your computer tomorrow.  Chances are the worm is already on your computer just waiting for instructions on what to do tomorrow???

Yes... websites like MySpace or Facebook. I've noticed that other news sources have picked up now on the story and they are warning people. Here is the link to some of these stories:

You mean like Facebook or something? It would come to our regular mail? I'll delete anything I see. I've already had friends invite me to Facebook so I'd know who did or didn't. I just won't open anything tomorrow, I guess! It's just one day, right?

This computer worm apparently is working through the social networking websites. So you may get an invitation from a friend to join one of these sites on April 1st. If you do.... DELETE immediately !!!  If you open, then these hackers will have all of the information that you enter on other sites (such as credit card info, etc.)

That's my .002 cents worth anyhow after watching 60 Minutes.

See, I don't know that's the thing they're talking about it getting through just your basic anti-virus protection.  I mean CBS got the worm and you know they have crazy security set up on their computers...

I asked my husband about this and he said they sent out a mass email the same day at his work about this.
He said we should be ok since we have an anti-virus protection and firewall installed. I hope so!

I just remembered another, even more disturbing web story (true btw!), one time I was doing a goggle search and came across what looked interesting, but the thumbnail was too small to really see what it was...  I clicked the image.  It was a fishing reel.  Okay not what I was looking for, so I closed the site out and went on with my search...

Some months passed.............................

Surprise, surprise.... I got in the mail a catalogue for....you name it. Fishing reels. Overpriced, like $120.....  Okay I like to go fishing if given the chance, but I'm not gonna pay $120-$300 for a reel....nope.  For a long time I couldn't figure out where the heck I could have gone or what the heck I could have done to get on that mailing list......  Then I remembered the one day I was looking for something (don't remember what) and saw the image on google and also one with a huge fish in someone's hands...

Yeah-uh....  They kept sending me that catalogue about once a month for the first year, and then eventually seemed to ease off it.  *knock on wood* haven’t seen any new offers for a $300 priced reel since I moved.

I'm reeling back in horror, oh God...this is real?  Not a joke??  I need to finish reading the rest.  I got as far as the part about stealing bank passwords and sensitive data and the facebook part and talking about the virus being able to send all friends on there messages...  Thankfully I haven't really used my account, there...but still... just the thought horrifies me.

Oh on another creepy note, I stumbled on a profile when surfing and got an email from what looked like one of the sites I stumbled upon... Ugh.....yeah if that wasn't creepy enough... It was a request for me to follow up a site and pick up the message request the person supposedly sent me...with the threat that the person would feel like I was ignoring them... Uh... I don't know them, so how would they feel like I ignored them??  I reported it as a scam...but I'm worried now about viruses...etc...
