I took the excuse to have a computerless day. Virus or no, it's not like I would die if I didn't use my computer for a day. Sometimes I need to prove that to myself.
This threat takes advantage of a known vulnerability in Windows RPC service. A patch for this vulnerability was released by Microsoft back in October.
Keep your Windows operating systems up-to-date, and use reliable anti-virus software. Many trustworthy security software companies offer a free version of their product. Examples include Avast, and AVG. If you are up-to-date, you are no more vulnerable now, than you were yesterday, or last week.
The problem that's being speculated here is simply that the virus is scheduled to use a new algorithm, connecting it to different domains. It could potentially receive new instructions... The part we are ignoring here is that it could have done this well before April 1st over a P2P network. It could also do this anytime after April 1st.
There are tools available from Microsoft, Symantec, and others to help remove this worm. If this applies to you, be sure to update your version of Windows after its removal.
So, I just heard on the news this may have been a world wide prank. It appears to be a no show, at least for now. My husband told me yesterday that with all the hype this thing was getting it's possible they will delay this thing. What do you all think?
I did hear about that late last night. So I went to http://www.microsoft.com (and fortunately was able to access it) and did a malware search. I didn't have any infected files.
They are now reporting that the person who did this may likely be getting information for spam. In any case, whatever the motive.... this is the second time that a hacker has planted a "sleeper cell" virus that awaits instructions. And it is frightening.
I'm glad I have a Mac! I'm not worried about this.
