Hi,

I wish you the best on the GRE. I had problems taking the Math portion of the exam for the State Teaching license. I'd completed all of my coursework and student teaching, so if I'd failed the Exam, then I did not know what I was going to do. I took the test and passed the Written, Usage (cannot recall exactly what that part was called... this was in 1994) but failed the math portion. I tried again and took just the math portion... and, I failed again. I did not give up. I knew I was going to get that license, but that my path might look different than I'd planned. I hired a tutor. We only met about 6 times... she helped me with the math but also with my confidence (regarding math) and I passed the test. I sent her a bouquet of flowers when I got the news!

When I had to take Statistics in Grad school, I made sure I did not take it until my second year... figuring that I would simply HAVE to pass and that I would figure out a way to get through. I took a recorded all the classes and read the notes along with the lecture a few days after class (for each week) and I studied with a good friend. I missed an A by only 2 points... I think I would have Aced the class, but I had to take the final exam after the class took it, since on the day of the exam, I was being tested after being called back for another mammogram after a suspicious lump was found (and I'd just had surgery for precancerous cells a month prior to this) ... so, I was a bit stressed! Funny enough, I actually learned to love that Statistics class. NEVER thought I would say that!

You'll get there. I am sure you know more than I do about different ways to study for the GRE... One thing I tell the kids I work with is to read different styles of paragraphs over and over. I know this has helped me in the past...  You'll make it. I will send positive thoughts your way!

You all are so amazing and uplifting to each. I have been battling the decision to go back to school and complete my MSN. I too was wondering if I was too old.Didn't want to stick out  in the class. I was 36 when I got my BSN and was able to take younger students under my wings and share some of the knowledge I had acquired as LPN for 15 years. Encouraging them not to give up and being there to listen when they were embarassed to talk to instructors. I want to complete my MSN and teach at the University I grad. from. I truly love the profession of nursing and medicine. If I can instill this love into just 1 person, I feel my mission is complete. I am no longer able to walk the halls as I have done for 34 years. I realize I can still be an important part of the profession I so dearly love. You all have helped me to see clearer I guess what I already knew. I have one BIG problem, the GRE. I'm at a point that I can't take anymore clases until I pass GRE. Do not take tests well ( the written part ) Will be attempting to take again in a few months in order to be able to start Fall '09 in Nursing Classes. Please remember in prayer. If this is what I'm to do then I'll pass.

What a great thread. I have enjoyed reading all of these posts.

I graduated College in 1975. I was 22.

I went back to school part-time when my daughter was about 7. I was 39. I added another major to my degree and got a teaching license.

When I was 47 I went back again(part-time again) while working part-time. I decided to "Never say Never." My dream was always to get a Master's Degree. I thought this goal was not achievable for me. I did not even tell my spouse about all this until I was accepted into the Grad program. He tends to ask those pesky questions such as, "How long will this take? What types of jobs will you be able to get? What are the Hidden costs of all this? Will you be licensed? Will that license transfer?" etc.

All I knew was that I wanted a Master's in Counseling Psychology. I knew everything else would fall in place.

Then life got in the way when I got my initial diagnosis of Ovarian Cancer. I was just about to start my internship at a local Hospital. I will never forget the kindness of my supervisor who simply said, "Well, just call us when you are ready to start." It was a plum position for an internship and I figured they would want to give it to someone else.

Extension after extension later I finished my degree and finally graduated in 2003. My husband MADE me go to Graduation... He was so proud of me.

I had a good friend in class who'd just completed her Bachelor's degree before starting the Grad program. She was 61. Very cool.

Good luck!

I went to nursing school late, when I was 25.  Best thing I ever did. I thought I was "old." When I grew up our generation said you could never trust anyone over thirty. The last month of my 28th year I spent crying. I found my first gray hair one day before I turned 28, certainly the last year I would be "young." As I stood in front of the mirror holding out my gray hair I called out for my fun-loving, always laughing husband (10 years my elder). And with tears rolling down my cheeks I said I didn't want to be old, I didn't want to be 29. He gently scolded me saying I should be ashamed of myself. He said there were many ppl that didn't live to celebrate their 29 Birthday and that every year was God's gift. And than he said I had been old since I was 7. I stopped crying, ashamed that I was so vane and confused by his statement. As the months pasted and I did some soul searching I understood what he meant.  It was around 30 that I discovered youth. Today I remain younger than I was at 30.  I imagine I will never truly be old.  Tuck

The more you use your mind, the better it works.
I used to walk with an 82 year old friend of mine (deceased now), I was 53. She would ask me if I was okay, did I need to rest, while she is still going strong!

Dead is too old.  Other than that - you are never to old to learn.  Congratulations and good luck!

I'd say you're never too old to keep learning.  I just got my Bachelors last year at 38 and hope to have a Masters in early 40's.  The oldest student I had in class was probably in his 60's.  Nobody cared about his age and neither did he.

Old is at least 10 years older than whatever age you are!

I enrolled in law school at 43 and there were lots of students around my age.  One professor called us OWLS (Older and Wiser Law Students!)  Like Jan, I found it was one of the best things I ever did for myself.

I went back to college when I was 32.  I was getting a paralegal degree first so I would have a job to support my two girls while I finished everything else.  I was afraid to go and said I was to old and that in 7 yrs (that's how long it would take) I would be 39.  A friend said to me "How old will you be in 7 yrs if you don't go to college?  Never to old to do what you want to do.  I had the time of my life and it was probably one of the best things I ever did for myself.

I went back to college at 36 and recieved my Masters at 41. I waited until my own children were all in high school and felt that I wouldn't be taking away from them and it was a great idea. I didn't even have to have a tutor since my kiddos were there to help me out. Go for it, enjoy it, embrce it.

The definition of old is in the beholder...I know "old" 30 year olds and "young" 60 year olds.

Education is never a waste...I think it is great that you want to go back to school!  I feel that when we are older we appreciate it so much more and also learn so much more!  Even if you finish school at 50, you will still most likely, and God willing, be in that career for 20 years!!!!!  Go for it!

All I know is that my definition of old gets higher and higher as I age.  I am 46 and have a hard time classifying even my paretns as old.  I consider old to be when you stop learning and doing and give up on an active life.  I just lost a dear friend who was 77 and to me she was still so young at heart.

Depends on how old the person is thats telling you that you are too old.I dont think anyone is too old if they wish to do something that they want to do.
Im 51 and havent gotten used to being 50 yet, thank goodness I dont own a gun after what JM said LOL
I know heaps of older people but acting old they do not.
Just remember you are only as old as the person you're feeling.
