Spotting after menopause

Hello.

Let me start by saying, Im 47 and have not had a period in 13 months.  Beginning 4 months ago, I started having a small cramp in my left side but it went away within a few days.  Like clockwork, the pain came back every month around the same time and went away.  However, this month, I now have some brown spotting. I went for a sonogram and transvag 2 days ago and they said all looked ok, but the lining of my uterus is 11x4x4 and are sending me for an biopsy tomorrow. Im freaking out because 1) heard the procedure is painful and 2) what they may find. C

Can anyone offer any advice or talk me off the ledge about what is going on.

Thank you!

I'm sorry you're dealing with this. Bleeding after menopause is actually more common than most people realize. And in most cases, it ends up being nothing serious, oftentimes just some sporadic ovarian activity (e.g., getting rid of those last eggs). But also, the ovaries never shut down; they produce hormones our whole lives. The body can even go into a pseudo or temporary menopause due to stress or medical treatment so it's not completely unheard of to have periods start back up after being without for a full year. And 47 is on the young side for menopause.

Hopefully, this is nothing serious! Let us know what you find out. Good luck.
