Period lasting over 2 weeks

Hi,

I'm nearly 53 and for the last year my period has been all over the place from once every couple of weeks then nothing for 2 mths e.g. Oct, Dec, Feb, then end of March, April, then June and now.  Most have been spotting or light lasting a few days to the occasional heavy one. This one is very light.  I'm not taking any medication and have not been to a doctor. I have assumed that it is probably the onset of Menopause.  There is no pain, bloating, sore breasts or anything I have been particularly concerned about however now I'm getting a bit fed up with having it!  Any suggestions?

Hi SunshineSet

Pap smears is something I have every 2 years as there is history of cancer in our family so I don't take any chances with that!  It's stopped now so all is good.

Thanks for your comments everyone - it's nice to have somewhere to go for support!

From what my friends tell me, that all sounds pretty normal.  The age is certainly right.  But if your period keeps on going, even if lightly, it is something worth asking your doctor about.  If you haven't had a pap smear for a long time, it might be worth seeing your gynecologist for a regular check up anyway, and asking about this stuff.

It sounds like how it was for my mother when she first started menopause.  You could try going to your gynecologist and finding out if there's anything to help you have an easier time with menopause and to confirm it is indeed menopause and not something else.
