endometrial biopsy

I am 52 years old had a period in November, 2007 then no period until May, 2008.  No problems in May and June, but this month having a very heavy period.  Doctor is did a endometrial biopsy, is this normal for this problem?  I am hoping that the reason for the biopsy is to see if I am moving toward menapause and not cancer.  Just want some reassurnce that this is something that happens to may women and I will be ok.

Hey Roni, I had a endometrial biopsy back in January 2007 at age 47 due to not what I would call really heavy bleeding but normal period type bleeding which extended out to a 12 day period. The endometrial biopsy came back normal. It can be used to check for several different things including endometriosis and pelvic inflammatory disease, not just cancer. I then had a vaginal ultrasound which disclosed two uterine fibroids. Uterine fibroids in themselves can cause heavy bleeding. I have had abnormal paps one after another. I finally was diagnosed with cervical dysplasia and had a cryotherapy procedure done back in December 2007. Since February 3rd of this year my periods have been coming farther apart, the first two were 8 and 9 weeks apart and lasted 8 days, this one came on after around 6 weeks but is into day 12 now. I have been put on Provera for 10 days to get me back regulated and then unfortunately I will have another period after about 3 or 4 days after finishing the pills. This should get me back on track. I would not worry about this automatically being cancer as your cycles do get weird around menopause. My gyn thinks I am perimenopausal. You might after finding out the result of your biopsy ask your gyn about putting you on Provera to straighten you out if things show normal.  Good luck and let us here.
