Sharp pain when taking a breath

my roommate is complaining of a sharp pain when he breathes in and a tightness in his chest...is there anything that can stop the pain and tightness w/o going to the ER?

A little more info:
he's 26 and overweight, and i believe he fractured a rib as a child.

Could be simply a torn chest muscle or COPD.  Go see a doctor.  If it's not really bad go to a GP.  If its scarey bad go to ER.

Hi,
Your friend may be suffering from a condition known as pleurisy. His fractured rib may be causing the problem. He should immediately consult a chest and lungs specialist.
