18 weeks and Miscarried

I was 18 weeks 4 days pregnant when I miscarried. This was my first pregnancy. At 14 weeks I had started bleeding so I rushed to the ER and was sent home the same night b/c I wasn't "cramping" I then went to my doc that Monday. (the bleeding happend on a Saturday) My Dr. did a pelvic exam and said I had an infection so she started me on antibotics and I got that taken care of. I continued to bleed some for 3 weeks and then it all stopped! My dr. sent me to another Dr who specialized in 'Baby in the Whome" to make sure that my cervix wasn't too weak to handle the pregnancy. Everything went GREAT with the specialist and she said everything was fine both me and baby! And that my cervix was fine as well! She said some women just simply bleed in pregnancy. I was finally relieved!! I had stopped bleeding for one week and then it started back again. Ugh! :( I wasn't cramping so I wasn't as worried b/c like my drs had said.. Some women just bleed! Well then the cramping started! I was told it was prob from constipation. Well I had put up with the light cramps for 2 days and finally "went to the restroom" and the cramps were gone! Shortly after the cramps went away my water broke... I raced to the ER and when I got to the ER I had started bleeding. The ER did a test to see if it was amniotic fluid and sure enough it was. :( My doc showed up to the ER to inform me that I was miscarrying and that I would deliver my baby and unfortunately there was nothing that they could do to help me. I was devastated. 12 hours later I delivered our beautiful little boy. No DNC was needed. I had him naturally. He was perfect! Everything had developed perfect no chromosome issues or anything! I just don't understand! Has this happened to anyone else? I go to my dr on Thursday to speak with her about what happened but Im sure her answer is going to be "Im just not sure" and I'll prob never get a straight answer. If this has happened to you or anyone you know please share with me. Thank You.

I'm so sorry for your loss, i to am going through a very difficult time. My husband and I just lost our little girl @22 wks. I had absolutly no problems in my pregnancy and on monday jan 24th 2011 i had pressure and with in 2hrs gave birth. They told me her lungs were not strong enough and she passed. It was the most heartbreaking day i have had. I have no one to talk to that has been through this type of experience, so it has helped to find this website. I go back to the Dr on the 8th and hopefully she has some ideal as to what the cause was. I feel in my heart that my cervix were not strong enough. please add me and inbox me if you need to talk.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss.  ! thing that doesn't make sense to me is the test they do to test for amniotic fluid comes back positive to not only the fluid but semen & blood as well.  I learned this while pregnant with my 2nd daughter as I bled HEAVILY on & off for over 10 weeks.

As for losing a baby that early it is VERY difficult.  I had still born twins @ 24 weeks.  I was in seeing my dr when their hearts stopped.  We were listening & suddenly could hear no movement or heartbeats so I was sent up the street to the hospital to be monitored & was told not to worry as maybe they were just in an odd position.  I got to the hospital within 10 minutes & headed up to L&D. they hooked me up to their machines & sent over 1/2 hour trying to locate the heart beats... they never found them.   They order an ultrasound to see what was going on & I was immediately rushed in for that.  According to the sonographer both babies had passed & it showed that they had stopped growing about 2 weeks earlier. I was given the option to wait & deliver a few days later or to get it over with as the nurse put it.  We chose to get the induction started then & within 16 hours I had my babies, a boy & a girl.  They looked so perfect. They weighed in at just over 1lb each. We never took a picture of them as we thought it would be too hard to see them, but regret it now.  After testing they found no reason for it & apparently it's something that just happens sometimes.

As hard as it is to believe right now the pain will always be there BUT will become easier to cope with.  I have since had a 2yr old daughter & am currently 31 weeks pregnant with a little boy.  REMEMBER you have your own little angel watching over you now & believe it with all your heart. I've been told that every time you feel a light breeze against your cheek & it's your angel rubbing their hand across just to let you know their there.

HTH

i am sorry for your loss, i know how you feel. i delivered my first baby, my son around 20 weeks. i did not have any bleeding though. i just randomly got sharp pains in my stomach, went to the ER and found out i was in labor. i was hospital and they tried to stop my contractions. after 2 days in the hospital, my water broke, my son was born and he died shortly after. since then, i have lost two more. i had one early miscarriage and then i lost my daughter the exact same way i lost my son. no doctor has ever been able to find a reason and it's been over a year since my third loss. i don't have any problems with my cervix, did not have an incompetent cervix, i just keep going into labor as soon as i get in between 17-20 weeks. i have seen every specialist out there and been tested for every diseases under the sun.. and they have found nothing.

unfortunately, most doctors will not start doing testing until you have 3 losses. but in your case, the infection could have caused your water to break. did they tell you what type of infection it was? 6 weeks after you have the baby you should have a post partum appointment and they should give you the results of the pathology report and that will tell you if there was any problems with the placenta, amniotic fluid, etc.

after i had my son i found out i had chorioamnioitis.. but my doctor thinks it was caused by my prolonged labor.

good luck to you, i hope you find a reason and i hope you are doing well during this hard time.

I am so sorry for your loss.  Unexplained miscarriages are always the hardest.  I can't say I miscarried at 18 weeks but I did miscarry at 14 weeks.  When I miscarried it happened within two days.  One day I had light spotting and the next day I was gushing, my waters broke and my baby and placenta came away. When they did testing they couldn't find anything wrong with him, he was perfect from head to toe and it was basically just left as unexplained.

You mentioned you had an infection?  I wander if that could have irriated your cervix causing it to open.  The problem I found is that doctors generalise bleeding as normal and I think that is WRONG.  They never really investigate why you are bleeding and they should.  I did do a lot of reading about miscarriages and stuff.  There is an infection called bacterial vaginosis that can cause later stage miscarriages.  I asked my doctor about that and she tested me and I didn't have it - could there be a chance you had that????  If you look up reasons for miscarrying in the second trimester it might give you some ideas of what happened

Take care :)
