Miscarriages

I have read a lot of women on here who have had D&C's after their miscarriages. I was wondering why?  I mean I understand why it's just that some have posted that there was no retained tissue.  I am paranoid about needing one. This is my second miscarriage this year and I didn't need one for my last and my bleeding is now down to a bear minimum. I started m/c last Saturday and Saturday was the brunt of all it. Horible day that was.

I had an u/s on Wednesday and it showed an empty uterus although it wasn't a vaginal u/s.  I was still bleeding and was too uncomfortable/hysterical to do that yet.  It also showed bleeding to be done still. I then passed more clots and had heavier bleeding on Friday. I have been bleeding very light since then. I am scheduled for another sonogram this coming Friday.  I was just wondering what are the factors on needing a D&C?

Oh and to Andi,

Thank you for your kind words on one of your posts to me. I appreciate it very much. It's nice to know I am not alone.

Thanks so much,
Heather

Yes.. Pregnancy can spark hyperthyroidism which causes miscarriages. I have a friend that is going through that right now. She is on medication so that she and her DH can conceive. DO you have the book, "What to Expect When You're Expecting"? It is on pg 478, Hyperthyroidism and Graves Disease. I hope this helps. I wish you all the best! Keep me posted. Shannon

No I havent had my thyroid checked this year.  I had it done last year as I couldn't get the scale off 112-113 and I'm 5'6".  I had 2 knee surgeries last year and a lot of stress, I think that was it becasue the thyroid came back WNL (within normal limits) and this year I'm steadily weighing 120-122. Does thyroid have something to do with m/c? Thanks for any info you can give!

Heather. I must first say that I am so sorry for your loss. My heart goes out to you. I wanted to ask if you have had your thyroid checked lately? Good Luck! Shannon

Thank you guys for your comments.  I just have been through a  traumatic time and would like to leave it alone now, so being paranoid about a d&c just adds to my grief. I wasn't sure what the circumtstances were, but you all have cleared that up now. Thanks.

I had passed the baby according to last sonogram. They just saw 'more bleeding to be done' as they put it.  It was so sad. I saw the heartbeat last wednesday and then that Saturday it was gone.  I was just 7 weeks. It seems the same thing happened last pregnancy so I'm supposed to go in for a work up to see what the potential problem could be when I'm 'emotionally' ready.

Thank you again for your comments and your stories.  My heart goes out to all of you in this situation.

Hey.  My thoughts are with you.  I had a missed miscarriage in January and i seriously went into what felt like labor and ended up in the ER.  I was gushing blood everywhere and passing out.  Sorry for the description but my clots were bigger than baseball.  I thought for SURE i had passed the baby but hadn't.  They pulled it out in the ER and after IV's etc..sent me home w/ methergine.  I went back twice for u/s and there was still a little lining on my uterus.  my bleeding was still fairly heavy though and I was still passing a few clots..not big though.  My Ob was really disappointed but really said I needed a d&c.  I my H& H were so low when they did my type and screen BEFORE my surgery that they said there's no way i could have lost anymore blood and been safe.  That's why my doc pushed me for the D&C..it helped that you were put to sleep, and everyone was so gentle about it and knew how hard it was...and seriously aside from the emotional stuff i felt a LOT better AFTER the d&C.
