Treatment after 3 consecutive miscarriages

Hello to all.  I am 39 years old and I am in the process of having my third consecutive miscarriage.  At six weeks vaginal us, empty gestational sac.  And again today (six weeks six days) still empty sac.  I'll go back next week to confirm blighted ovum and probably do a d&c.

We started seeing a specialist after my second miscarriage and he ran ALL of the blood work.  The whole shabang, and found nothing that would indicate any problems.   My husband and I decided to do progesterone suppositories, baby aspirin, pre-natal vitamins, 2 mg of folic acid a day (in addition to the vitamins) and 50 mg of a thyroid meds (due to some blood work results).

We didn't do any HCG shots because I have very regular periods, ovulate on my own just fine and we always get pregnant right away (this last time it was the very first try).  We also didn't try the chlomide pills...

I'm wondering what kinds of treatments any of you have had after three miscarriages?  Shots w/ progesterone?  Shots with IUI?

Anyone have any thoughts on treatments/drugs that worked for them?  Thanks in advance for all your thoughts on this.

Thanks for the advice.

I guess I am also wondering, at what point do we determine that I can get pregnant but cannot carry a successful pregnancy?

If it means having a dozen miscarriages... I have no interest in pursuing that whatsoever.  But I guess that is one of those "unknowns".  And unfortunately the only way to know may include- keep trying.  I just think that at 39, there will come a point for me where enough is enough.

I just feel a little sad for my husband.  He is 34.  I really don't think he understands the magnitude of the situation.  He is really indifferent as to whether or not we have children at all.  In fact, the first pregnancy a year ago really sent him into a tailspin.  But I don't think he has the foresight to understand that it may not feel like a big deal to him, today, at 34, to not have a child.  I seriously think he will be very very sad about it ten years from now.

hi kristine- your story sounds like mine but keep your head up cause i ended up with a successful pregnancy and i am holding my 10 week old son.

i had 2 mcs within 5 months, both needing d and c's.  my docotr did all the same testing as you even on the tissues from the 2nd d and c.  doctor even old me it would hav been a girl, hard news to hear.  so with nothing wrong we tried again a 3rd time, like you with prog and aspirin but for poops abd gigles and this time it stuck.  so hang in there.  i honestly swear that i might not be able to cary girls and that i can only carry boys and thats what happened.

Hey,   I feel really confident with this office and the doctors.  I was actually on the phone with him for the last 30 minutes.  He was further explaining the reason for testing the tissue from the d&c.  I think we will end up testing the tissue for sure.

Yes, we had ALL of the testing, including karyotyping. It was called a complete repeat miscarriage panel. He even did the ink dye test on my uterus.  Yeah, that was fun. Everything for both of us showed normal as far as chromosomes.   But I will definitely bring it up next week to make sure there isn't any additional blood work we could do.  Good idea.

I didn't have any problems with the d&c for my first miscarriage, so I guess I'm not as nervous about it.  But I understand what you are saying with the scar tissue.  I'm sure if you have another d&c it will be much better.

I agree with you, I don't want to rush rush into it either.  Although I am sure that after my second vaginal us at six weeks six days, no yolk no pole, that this won't work.... I will feel even better about going forward if the case is the same next week at eight weeks one day.

I'm just really afraid that this is the beginning of us not being able to have kids at all.  I cannot imagine it.  But my gut is really telling me that right now.  It stinks.

I got pregnant on my own, using the Clear Blue Easy Fertility Monitor.  You ovulate early, which may lead to egg quality issues.  I've heard that an egg needs to fully mature.  CD 14 is obviously the ideal time.

My RE told me that Clomid can give you a better egg.  Since you (and I) get pregnant so quickly, an IUI may not be completely necessary.  If I didn't get pregnant this past cycle, then we were going to do IUI with Clomid just to give us the best chances.

You said that you had bloodwork done, but did you have the karyotyping done?  My husband and I had a bunch of bloodwork done at our initial consult.  Now, that I am dealing with two miscarriages, they are going to do the Repeat Pregnancy Loss panel.  They are definitely different that initial blood testing.  You may want to ask your RE specifically about this.  Now that you have had 3 miscarriages, it is time to get super serious.

I'm going back on Friday for another ultrasound.  I'll be 5 weeks, 5 days.  If the sac is still empty, then they are going to do the bloodwork.  I'm not running to a D&C right away, as I got scar tissue from it last time and had to have it repaired.  I will have another ultrasound probably next Friday as well.  I want to make sure 100% that things are over.  I've heard of women whose doctors said that they were suffering a missed miscarriage, and the baby shows up at the 7 weeks ultrasound.

I have a friend who suffered 3 miscarriages within 6 months.  She's 30 and has no kids.  She is also seeing my RE who ran the RPL panel.  Well, they found a crazy genetic problem with her husband's sperm.  They did IVF with PGD (genetic testing on embryos), and all of the embryos are abnormal.  Their only option is to do donor sperm.

Do you feel confident with your RE?  Is it a well established clinic with good success rates?  If I were you,  I would probably request the most aggressive testing ASAP.

I am sure that it is an egg quality issue-  I am 39 so that tells me my eggs are old.  I had no clue that you could have different eggs from different cycle days.  Did you do IUI, or are you saying based on your surge it was a cd 17 egg?

My cycles are very regular.  My surge was on cycle day 11.  I did an over the counter predictor kit (the little smiley face).

I would hope he would explore egg quality issues, but I didn't know how he could do that?  Might they monitor my cycle and tell us exactly when to have intercourse, to improve our chances of having a better quality egg?

We are already exploring IVF simply because we figure, with the cost, it might be more efficient to do IVF now, rather than two or three IUI then an IVG.  But we really are confused right now.

No kids yet.  We got married late.  Well, I did.  I was 36 when we got married.  My hubby is five years younger.  Oh well.

So-  IUI with clomid would help us get a better egg????

Do you think that your RE will explore egg quality issues?  I ovulate a little later than most, ranging cycle day 17-23.  This pregnancy is a CD 17 egg.  My RE thinks that my later ovulation may have something to do with poorer quality eggs.  Do you think that you will explore IVF?  For us, if nothing comes back on the RPL bloodwork, then we will probably do IUI with Clomid to get a better egg.  Do you have any kids?  We don't.

Hey there.  Gosh, what a buuuummmer ( to put it mildly).  I'm so sorry for you guys.  I know first hand, that there is really nothing anyone can say to make it better.  But the support of knowing that others are going thru it helps me sometimes...

Anyway, I will probably do a d&c after next weeks ultrasound (my third vaginal us) unless I start to pass on my own and doc thinks it will be o.k. for me to pass it.

I think our situations are quite similar because we both seem to get pregnant quickly.  I keep hearing that that is such a good sign, but I am still perplexed about what we should do for future.  I know our doc (also an RE) will help a lot when we speak next week...

But I'm getting the feeling that, in our case, because they can't pinpoint a reason- we are just trying stuff because it can't hurt (this time we tried progesterone suppositories and baby aspirin).  Not because it will increase our chances of being successful, but because we may as well try SOMETHING.  And that is soooo frustrating.

Ya' know what I mean??

Hi Kristine,
I'm so sorry for your loss.  My situation is somewhat similar.  I'm 30 years old and had a blighted ovum last October and had a D&C at 9 weeks.  The sac was empty.  We got pregnant our second month.  We then got pregnant again our first month trying (had a take a few months off due to surgery).  I had an ultrasound at 5 weeks 1 day, and the sac is empty again.  I'm going back on Friday for another ultrasound.  I don't know what is going on.  We are working with an RE.  Both my husband and I are going to have the repeated pregnancy loss panel done on Friday.  We are supposed to get the results back within a month.  I really didn't think that it was going to happen again.  Are you having a D&C?
