Couldn't see baby in sac - where was the baby?

I saw the baby's heartbeat (strong 160 beats) at my 8 week appointment.  At my 12 week appointment, the doctor couldn't find a viable embryo, only debris in the sac.  I opted to let nature run its course, but my doctor wanted to see me each week to keep tabs on my progress (or in my case, lack of progress).  At my appointment the next week, the sac had grown, but still was completely empty.  At my next appointment (would have been 15 weeks) the sac had again grown and surprise! the baby was in the sac with a visible head and arm/leg nubs.  My doctor made very very sure that the baby was dead.  My question is:  Where the heck was he before and why are we seeing him now?  It was horrible!!  My body still hasn't gone through the "miscarriage" process, so I am having a D & C next week.

Thank you for your kind words.  We are actually doing fairly well, considering...My doctor didn't have an explanation.  He told me he has seen 1000's of miscarriages during his career, but has never seen that before or seen a miscarriage quite like mine.

I'm so sorry for what you are going through. I can't even guess I'm not sure why you were unable to see the baby until now? I'm really mind blown. What kind of answers has your dr given you? I wish I could be more help. I'm here if you need support or someone to talk to. Best wishes to you..I hope you feel better soon.
