miscarriage or irregular period?

I have not had a period since xmas 2010, prior to that my periods have been regular, I have done a pregnancy test and it came out negative. On tuesday i started bleeding a tablespoon full of blood and assumed i had started my period. When i got home that evening my legs, back, abdo area all were hurting alot and i was feeling really sleepy and feverish and cold.
The next morning i woke up and had no further bleeding, at lunchtime i still  had no further bleeding so i phoned my doctor surgery to make an appointment just to be on the safe side. They were closed, and it automatically connected me through to NHS Direct. After a convo with them i was referred to the A&E department of the hospital and told to get seen there...I WAITED A FURTHER 7HOURS and was seen around7.30ish by a local GP who said i was not pregnant and he I will need to go back to my local DR's surgery and get seen by them to get referred for an ultra-sound scan. I have just been to my Dr's and been seen by a medical nurse and she said it seems like you have had a miscarriage and there would be no point to refer you for a scan because they take approx 4weeks and by then it would be pointless. I was gobsmacked I said I need to know If i have ever been pregnant and now have had a miscarriage or wether it was just an irregular period due to various factors e.g. stress.
she spoke to me in a dreadful manner i could not stop crying, I said im only 21 I have never been in this situation before it would have been my first pregnancy I NEED someone to take ownership and confirm wether i have EVER been pregnant and have miscarried or if it was an irregular period. She said I AM TELLING YOU there is no point to get an ultra sound scan done, you WERE pregnant, you have a missed miscarriage as I was only 5-7weeks apparently.

I'm so sorry.  Truly, some in the medical field need to learn to be a little more sensitive.

If you only had a bit of bleeding like that, it sounds unlikely that you had a miscarriage.  However, it is possible that it was one and incomplete.  Bloodwork testing for a hormone called beta/hcg can tell them that.  If they did do bloodwork and tested for that hormone, and it came back negative, then it is unlikely you were pregnant.

To me it sounds more like an irregular period, but if the wait is long for an ultrasound, you can request your beta/hcg levels be tested.  Again, I am so sorry, and I wish you well.

So sorry you have been going through this!!!  Some people can be absolutely awful.  I would go to your nearest ER and have them take a look.  ER does not require a referral for an ultrasound, and they can do bloodwork for you as well.  Personally, I would report that woman and switch dr's immediately if able to.  Big hugs to you honey!!
