? regarding pregnancy and MS

Good evening

Just wondering if some light could be shed or an opinion on a question that we have. Of course, tomorrow I have my appt. with a different Neurologist and will ask her as well. However, my husband and I would like to know if diagnosed with MS, can we still try for a child. It seems as though everything I read on the net varies from MS causing repeated miscarriages to some women having healthy children.

I miscarried 6 months ago and of course that is when my symptoms returned but not sure if the miscarriage was caused by this disease. Having a healthy child means so much to us but we also don't want to try at this point in an unknown state of being.

Thank you for your time.
Susanne

MS does NOT predispose to miscarriage.  Period.  However, being on an Interferon MS med does often cause miscarriage.   The interferons are Avonex, Rebif and Betaseron.  Copaxone is not known to increase risk of miscarriage, but it must carry the warning. Pregnancy is not dangerous for women with MS.  In fact, there is some data that over time it may be beneficial to the course of the disease.

I would recommend that you be tested for the MS mimic that does cause increased miscarriages.  That is the problem of having blood that forms clots too easily.  It goes by several names:  Hughes Syndrome, Anti-Phospholipid Syndrome, Sticky Blood Syndrome.  Testing for it are several blood tests.

I hope this helps.

There is a great article about MS and Pregnancy on the Health Page of the same name.  Please read it.
