Hi, all! I'm on island time now, losing track of time and even days as I just enjoy. OK, so I don't enjoy the occasional symptoms, especially after getting too warm, but mostly life is good.
We had planned on doing some snorkeling, but one morning we were awakened by lightening, thunder, high winds, and heavy rain. It was awesome, but did mess up the snorkeling plans, as the water got churned up.
We discovered a good little eatery and pub across the street that my roommate hadn't tried in all her visits here over the years. We had a pizza with ham, pineapple, and macadamia nuts; unique and good. Another day I got a submarine sandwich, and last night a turkey dip. Good, homey food at reasonable prices (as well as 15 T.V.s for sports fans).
Saturday had some disappointments, as the lady I wanted to have ship some jam home for me wasn't at the swap meet, Cafe O'Lei in Wailuku isn't open for lunch on weekends, etc, but it was still a gorgeous day, and then we discovered the pizza across the street, the sunset was pretty, the breeze was nice, ahhh.
Sunday was a lazy day. My roommate worked on the computer, I walked on the beach and picked on small shells and beach glass. We watched whales, waves, people enjoying the beach. We went into Lahaina, almost bought tickets on a Full Moon Cruise; with an astronomer to point out constellations, a whale expert to speak about the whales and an underwater sound thing to pick up the songs of whales. I decided that I couldn't stay up that late, as much as I wanted to; saved some money, but missed out on an event of a lifetime.
Monday we drove Upcountry. It took us a while, as we were stuck behind a long line of traffic. Then we found out why; there was a large group of whales right off the side of the road; maybe 150 yards out. Most people pulled over and whipped out cameras, but we kept going, after gawking in wonder.
We had called the lady with the jams and jellies, and she gave us directions to her home in Makawao, where we had a nice long chat, ordered my jam shipment, met her dog, two Maine Coone/mix cats (two more were outside). She told us to call if/when we came back to the island, and we could get together and go out for drinks or lunch or whatever. It was cool; we got along great!
We then went to lunch at the Hali'imaile General Store, the most amazing place, brain child of chef Bev Gannon. I had the most incredible meal (pictures posted) including an awesome pineapple upside down cake made with fresh island pineapple. It was expensive, but each bite was exquisite. I had grilled Mahimahi with fresh basil, wild mushrooms, a buttery lemony sauce, over mashed potatoes and a bed of sauteed baby spinach. It took a long time to eat because each bite was so full of flavor I had to savor it.
Next, we drove back toward Makawao, and stopped at an Art school in the wonderful old Baldwin Estate. I took some pictures of quilts inside, a rainbow eucyliptus (sp?) tree outside (pictures posted of those, too), some flowers, and drank in the beauty.
In Makawao, we went to the Sheri Reeve gallery and she was there, painting, and trying to talk us into buying T-shirts with prints of some of her latest works on them. That's mainly why we went there, so it was an easy sell! We had a good time joking with her, and bought plenty of shirts, a decorative tile, and some beautiful bookmarks.
My roomate had called an artist that she had bought a small porcelein dish from, left a message saying that she wanted a larger piece that went with it. She called back while we were shopping for T-shirts, and arranged to meet us at the Grand Wailea where she was part of an art show/sale this morning, knowing just what piece she wanted.
This morning, we drove south. The Grand Wailea is an amazing place; I'm sure I couldn't afford to eat there, let alone stay the night. I thoroughly enjoyed looking around. After my roommate bought her platter, we walked down through the grounds, went into a chapel with the most amazing stained glass all around. I said a little prayer for my brother, as well as sending up thanks for all the wonders I'm seeing and experiencing here.
We walked along the beach, took a few pictures, then headed north. We stopped in Kihei at the Cafe O' Lei there; it was as good as the one in Wailuku. I had a marvelous curry chicken salad on local greens with Papaya curry dressing. After, we walked over to the Rainbow Moon health food store and bought a couple of my Kihei health food cookies, then drove back.
We were trying to decide if we would drive up Haleakala or go snorkeling tomorrow, then checked the weather. There are high wind and surf warnings, as well as some rain storms. Oahu will probably get the worst of it, but we're sure to get some of it here. It may make travel difficult, and the high winds would make the drive up the volcano difficult, maybe dangerous. We'll check the latest news in the morning, and decide then.
Snorkeling is probably out this trip, as the high surf warning is through Friday, and will churn things up.
Back-up plan, the Maui Ocean Center and Aquarium. If nothing else, watching the waves pound from our condo will be great. We have goodies to finish, and some healthy food, too. :o)
We also need to work on acceptance of how cold it will seem when we get back to Portland Saturday night, at nearly midnight!
Aloha,
Kathy
