HAHA, that's funny Mary. Just because I pilot a boat doesn't mean I'm any good at it. You should see me dock in a stiff wind sometimes..yikes.:)
My other daughter and her family are comming for a visit next weekend, I'll get them to guide me through this. I'll also get them to fix it so when I open another tab it has an 'address box' instead of just a blank page...it actually says "blank page" on the new tab.
Mike
That's good Mike but a whole new search shouldn't be necessary. Ask that daughter of yours to show you where the address bar is on each 'window' you have open. There should be a small box to the right of that to click and open a new 'window'.
The public libraries in the US have regular classes (free) about how to do basic computer navigation. Since you can power vessels around in the water you'll be a quick study using a screen. You probably just need a hands-on class or two with a LIVE presentation.

Yeeeehaa! It works!
I tried a few of the suggestions with no luck. When i open a second tab there is no address field, it's just a blank page.
When I pressed control C nothing seemed to happen.
But when I highlited the link then right clicked a box offers a choice of 'search with mystart engine', which opens a new tab and brings up a bunch of websites, or whatever they are. So the right click option is the answer for my computer.
Thanks so much everyone for the suggestions! This is going to make my life easier, and make me more likely to read the links people post in here.
The stuff you learn here.........:)
Mike
Links to the MH site are 'click and go' - like the one DV used as an example.
Links to places other than MH require a 'copy and paste' method (like the ones TLC, Jane and Shell described) and appear unhighlighted - like the Google link TLC gave.
The MH links should be very easy to access Mike. Hold down the Ctrl (control) key while you click on the blue highlighted link. A new window will open with the second MH topic page. This also works when you hover and click the curser over a member name, Health Page, shortcut, etc, etc - anything that is highlight blue or makes the cursor transform from an arrow to a pointing finger.
BTW, the MH terms of use agreement actually prohibits the posting of links to other sites but will often allow it when we're sharing information that isn't available on this site. If you leave a link to a competitor site on the MH forums you should be prepared to see the entire post deleted by the moderators. FYI, MH mods are paid employees who keep things running smoothly, help solve problems, enforce the terms of use and generally bridge the gap between site users and site owners. They're posts are easily recognized by their trademark purple flower avatars. The forum Co-CLs are members like you who have been asked to volunteer whatever time we can to help with the postings on this specific community. We don't have any special *powers* - just the lovely purple flower asterisk beside our username and (like so many of the members here) a strong desire to help whenever we can.

Highlight the link ....
Right click once (using mouse)
click copy
One click in your browser
Right click paste!
WVala! No more writing that down!
If you are using Google Chrome as your browser, which is much faster than Internet Explorer, by the way, you can highlight the text, then right click. If it is an actual web address, a menu will show up asking you if you want to go there. If it is just a term, like a symptom or drug name, etc. a menu will appear when you right click that will ask if you want to do a google search for that term.
Maybe you are just made of magic, doublevision.
I'm on a Mac, the control-c and control-v shortcuts are the same as for PC.
By the way, "control-c" means holding down the control button, then hitting the "c" button, then letting up on both buttons.
Best,
Jane
ok, I guess that's not it!!
I think the reason why sometimes a URL is posted as text and other times as a hyperlink depends on the way it is posted.
If the person posting the URL hits Enter after pasting/typing it, a hyperlink is created. If it is just pasted/typed without hitting enter, it displays as text.
I'll test this.
URL and Enter:
http://www.medhelp.org/posts/Multiple-Sclerosis/OT-connecting-to-a-link/show/1700554
URL, no Enter
http://www.medhelp.org/posts/Multiple-Sclerosis/OT-connecting-to-a-link/show/1700554
I use the cursor to highlight the link, then hit control-C to copy the highlighted area (on a PC, Mac users may do something different). Then I open a new tab or new window in my browser and hit control-V to paste it in the address field.
You don't have to open a new tab or browser, but then you'd have to go away from this site.
I'll put in a web address for practice:
www.google.com
