Dentist/Hygienist visit

Just a quick question.....is it Ok to see a hygienist while I am having a relapse (now in third week) and apart from telling my dentist and hygienist that I have just been diagnosed with MS are there any other implications I should be aware of. I feel like I am on a steep learning curve at present.

Hi Sarah,

I was just at my dentist last week (broke my tooth on a toffee) and he told me my health and any drugs I might be taking comes first and as my dentist he will work round that,

so it's fine to go, just remember to tell the hygenist/dentist you have been diagnosed with MS and any medication you're currently taking

Thank you for your insight on this question Quix.

I was going to cancel my hygeinist appointment for next month and just have the dental check-up. TBH I simply don't like the hygeinist part of seeing the dentist - then again I suppose not many people enjoy the whole dentist experience!

After reading what you said however, I shall keep my appointment, I had just thought of it as making my teeth look nicer. I hadn't thought about the possibilities of gingivitis.

I am sorry that you have been diagnosed with MS, I hope you are coping ok.

I think the recommendations are for regular cleaning without regard to relapse - unless you can't lie in the chair.  Gingivitis is a source of inflammation and sometimes infection that can worsen MS - Just as gingivitis may seed the arteries and be related to ME and stroke.

If you have a lot of gingivitis, you would want the hygienist to be very gentle to avoid the bacteremia associated with some cleaning (and brushing).

Also, I know at one time Co-Q10 was recommended for gum health and there was even a dental solution of Co-Q10 for application.  I don't know if that is still felt to be true or if it was disproved.

So, my recommendation is 1) call your neuro and ask this question.  if no answer, get the cleaning done.
