Stupid, stupid and more stupid...

Well, I took a fall yesterday, and now I just feel stupid.  Granted, I am not the most graceful, and will not be doing ballet, BUT, how can I fall over nothing?!?

I was just about to leave to go to work, and realized my cell phone was on the counter. On my way to grab it, I tripped on lord knows what, and down I went. Hard to get up, with the stupid brace I wear.

Driving to work, I noticed I was in pain. My foot and knee. I think falling while wearing the leg brace is sort of like falling when u are skiing. The foot doesn't move and can't correct itself. So made it through the day with the big ole limp going on, worse than normal for me.

Went to the doc today, got xrays of my knee, ankle and foot. We will see. I just feel stupid and angry  at myself.

I wish there was "something" that made me fall, toy on floor, stairs, curb. carpet...etc.  I would feel better about the fall I guess.

That is it, just a short vent here...

Michelle

I've had slippers do that.

I suspect that docs ask about abuse partly because they're required to report it, and consequently don't want to miss something that might later be obvious.

It seems falling over comes with the territory doesn't it?

I've lost count of how many times I've wobbled over or bumped into something - especially my toes, keep stubbing them - I'll think ow...then I'll think why'd I say that, they're numb anyway lol

anyway, don't be hard on you and I hope you haven't done any damage

Hi Michelle,

I have no diagnosis as of now so no real reason to be covered in bruises, walking into doors and tripping on air.  My DH bought me new slippers last year thinking that is what was making me trip.  But alas, the magic slippers did not work.

I have been falling down for years.  Torn a new pair of pants by collapsing in the parking lot at work once.  Walked out into the air (which actually ended up being a stair case) and fell the whole way down at my DH university professor's house.  I could go on but I think you get the embarrassing part.

My family has always thought I was just a klutz and bruise easily.  Have also had doctor's ask me about abuse.  Funny, they seem more concerned about that and willing to help me with it then there are about finding out why I am falling, tripping and constantly banging into things. (okay that was my little rant!)

So next time you find youself in this situation just remember there are many of us staggering and falling around the globe with you! Anna

Falling does make one feel stupid but honestly it isn't. We fall down and we get up. now that makes me feel even dumber trying to get up. lol

i run into lots of walls too. I don't know if i just cut corners to soon or what. sometimes i just say' my grandmothers name was Gracie, not me'

I worry most when i'm at work. don't want to look like i'm drunk or something, but i know i do. nothing like waiting until you are 50 be become the class clown.

Hi there,
Your first sentence struck a chord with me. The problem is I'm a ballet teacher. (Tap & Jazz too), 12 months ago I could do triple pirouettes now I can hard move from one foot to another with out looking drunk. I am constantly making a fool of myself in front of my students ( aged 3 to 18) as I am not dx I keep brushing it off with " I have a balance problem at the moment".

I'm really not sure how long I can keep going like this.

So now I know why my doctors are always asking me who I live with! I'm always covered head to toe with cuts and bruises. :)

Dan,

Love those bumber stickers. Would need to find a Y-shirt with one of those on it. My doctors would freak out if I came in wearing something like that. :)

My PCP knows me and my husband so when I have walked in with the same cheek broken twice  a year apart she knew my husband did not do it. I have some hum dinger falls. I have actually broken that side of my face three times!

My graceful marathon runner brother fell twice in the same day recently so I do not feel so bad.

My motto has always been is God can make it I can Break it!

Couple of bumper stickers come to mind.  One says "Warning: I Brake (cross that out and insert 'fall down') for no apparrent reason."  The other, upside down on the back of a Jeep, says, "If you can read this, please turn me back upright."

Glad all of you are okay.  Glad none of my spills were near that bad.

3 MORE protruding disks in my neck, I forgot to add. Now they're ALL protruding. On top of that, I have bilateral ribs in my neck that they call an anomaly. What bugs me is that it's obvious now because I have more inflammation than ever before. - Hunch neck LOL!

Percocet take me away!
I'm just mad it's not working today!

I had to ryhme.

Thank God for humor.

Your not stupid!!!! Do not be so hard on yourself.
That is how I found out that I am may have MS, still undianosed.  The doc is only 98% sure I have it. <---------said in a very sarcastic tone.

I tripped over the "air" and hurt my back trying to cushion the fall.
Anyway, ended up in the emergency room and here I am.

Like I said do not be hard on yourself, you will be ok.

Michelle,
I am so sorry you fell. I, too, know the experience of tripping over air. Yes, it is embarrassing even when I'm by myself. Note to self: stop being embarrassed when nobody can see you.

My falls are 99% related to my looking to the left with my weight shifted to my left foot. It's a surefire thing. My physical therapist has proven it to me over and over. Some where there is a disconnect with brain and body on the left side.

Dennis,Ess and Nickie: I'm glad you all survived your falls without any permanent injury.  Nickie: OUCH!

Michelle, we've all done it so run the club, literally. My first fall resulted in a concussion and seven staples so be careful! I hope your x-rays are negative and the soreness and pain resolve quickly!!

Dennis,

We must have been typing at the same time.  I do think my foot drop is what causes me to be so clumsy as well.  I just thought the AFO was doing the job, but perhaps the other leg is starting to get foot drop as well.  I hope not.

I am glad the cane works well for you...

Thanks Ess and Nickie!

Yes, you are right, most of the time I am up-straight, so that is good. My PCP  asked if my hubby ever hits me at my visit today, due to all the huge bruises all over my legs.  I thought he was kidding, but then realized he was serious with this question. I explained that I generally don't fall, but do bump into things, LOTS.  I am so used to seeing tons of bruises on me, I don't realize perhaps it is not a normal sight? Yikes...

Nickie, that sounds like a horrific fall you had.  I am glad you are ok.

I have been doing that for years. Alway felt it was from drop foot and the last time I saw my Vanderbilt Neuro it was finally confirm on exam that I do experience drop foot on the right. I refer to it as tripping over air. :)

At least in my case I think what happens is as I move my right foot forward while walking the tip of my right foot meets extra resistance that is not expected when the toe drags on the floor. The next thing I know I'm flat on my face because my right leg has not reached where it should be as I shift my weight to the right leg.

Since I got my cane ( which I use 99% of the time) I have not had this happen very much. I use the cane in my right hand and because I out a little bit of my weight on the cane it seems to lift the right leg slightly so that the right foot doesn't hit the ground like before.

Ohh, how I know, I know! I did the same thing, but fell backwards down a bunch of concrete steps, and hit every other one with the back of my head. My worse fall, ever!

My brain told me I had a hold of the doorknob, and I was double checking to see if the door was locked before I went shopping. I was so used to doing it, and moved my body down the steps before I had a hold of the door. Yeah, something like that.

Embarrassing as ever! Then I had to explain my stupidity to the hospital. They checked me for drugs, thinking I was high. Blah, blah. Gr!

I hope you feel better! ((hugs))

Hey Michelle. You're not the only one. I too fell over 'air' about a month ago, and am still having problems that might or might not be connected to that.

Please be easier on yourself. Think of all the times you *haven't* fallen. You do well nearly all the time, so give yourself a break.

Hoping you feel better fast,
ess
