Does anyone get Burning Mouth Syndrome in relapse or exacerbation?

I have just found this on the internet.  I have been searching for what this has been causing my mouth problems in a relapse.  It is "Burning Mouth Syndrome."

Since I had my relapse 3 weeks ago, as always is the case, I get numbness in the roof of my mouth, down the back of my throat causing difficulty swallowing.  This can cause me to have a panic attack when this comes on.  I also tend to get a "scalded sensation/small bumps" in the roof of my mouth.

I wanted to put this out there on the forum in case anybody else has unexplained mouth symptoms during a relapse or pseudoexacerbation.

See if this is what it sounds like: http://facial-neuralgia.org/conditions/tn-gn.html  (glossopharyngeal neuralgia).  It's a neuralgia of the 9th CN.  Like TN except the 9th, rather than the 5th.

I've had ms for 16 years. You need a new neurologist if they're hard to read. I had to change for the same reason and it was the best decision ever just my 2 cents.

I have bms as well and keep it manageable with avoiding all peppers, alcohol, tomatoes, and switching toothpaste and mouthwash. I've had every blood test in the world multiple times and nothing is out of whack. It's got to be ms.

I have told him of recent that I had mouth numbness and difficulty swallowing after my acute pseudo-exacerbation 3 weeks ago.  He sent me to the ER, which they did not do a thing for me...waste of time.

I called into the office the other day to see if he will please try me on some steroids.  He just does not want to start me on any "MS" treatment, because he is still not giving me the "official DX."  (Benign MS)  He says I have a lot going on.  What that means, who knows.  He is often hard to read on certain days.

Thanks all for your replies.  Everything is just different for all; it is just strange when it affects your mouth, swallowing, choking etc.

Hi Terri,

I don't think I have ever had any bumps but I have had the feeling that my mouth was burnt or scalded.  I have thought it odd and just figured that I had burned my mouth and forgot.  I have also lost my sense of taste.  I have had a few bumps here and there but don't know if any of this is related.

I think anywhere that there are nerve fibers could be a place for MS to strike.  Have you told your doctor?

Thanks Terri

I have experienced a burning sensation on one side of my tongue twice now, but I can't recal if it occured along with other symptoms.

Anyway, both times lasted less than half an hour. It felt like half my tongue had been dipped in acid....very uncomfortable.

I figured it must be some kind of neuralgia issue, and I really hope I don't experience it too often.

I haven't felt the "small bumps", and I haven't really noticed any difficulty swallowing, although I often choke on food or a glass of water, not sure if this is related.

Take care

Mike
