Having surgery, is general anesthisia or spinal ?

Hi everyone, I have SPMS and having surgery next week.  The dr wants to know if I want a spinal to freeze me ir General anesthisia?  What are your opinions I've had two different dr say the opposite, one is better then the other for someone with MS.

Any advise I would appreciate so much
Take care

Tell them you get nauseated with GA they can fix that. I used to be so bad I would come out of anesthesia vomiting. I have not been sick with my last few surgeries.

thanks.... I guess I'll just have to wait and make my decision then.. I'm thinking GA, I didn't like the LP I had years ago and think I spinal would make me so nervous, never had it before when I'm awake in surgery?   No... I can't see that.. but my hubby wants me to think about it, as I do get nauseated from GA.

thanks for your replies, hope your doing ok

I personally hate spinal anesthesia. I do not like needles in my spine it is like a LP or the hours of coming out of it where I can't move. I have done both and am for be knocked out personally. I have had lots of surgery with MS and have never had a problem.

I agree with Poppy about spinal being easier for your body to deal with. After surgery it can take a while for your body to cleanse itself of general anesthesia. It can leave you groggy and can cause nausea.

MS wise I don't think there's a big difference. I've had both and was much more alert/aware after the spinal. With the spinal I made sure that I would be completely out if it during surgery. I did not want to be aware of anything thatnwas going on! They give me something like Versed and i was completely out of it. Versed is more sedative than anasthetic.

I don't know about anaesthesia from an MS perspective but from a general perspective, a spinal is better as it is not as hard on your system and you aren't left with that groggy, gross feeling.  I'm also told a general anaesthetic takes about a year for your system to completely recover from.

My two cents for what it's worth.
