Help...my air conditioner quit working

This has not been a good week for me. My car has been overheating so it is sitting in the driveway torn apart right now while my husband trys to work on it after work each day. Now I woke up this morning and it was 80 in the house. My outside unit is not working and I cant get anyone to look at it until 4pm.

It is now 85 in my house and out high here today is suppose to be 96 with a heat index of 115. How can I possibly stay cool? We only have one ceiling fan and I have it on high but it is just blowing around the hot air.

Thank you all for your replies and ideas. Sorry, I didn't spend much time on the computer yesterday. I did take ALOT of cold showers! And the sheet idea was great.

Luckily I survived the day. I couldn't leave the house and go anywhere cool because my husband was at work and my car was sitting in hte driveway torn apart.

Thankfully I got the air fixed last night and it finally cooled off in the house around 9. And I will be testeing the car today.

You can always sit in a tub of cold water... well, as cold as it gets.  With a fan on ya!

Luckily the problem is most likely something very simple a contactor which is and electrical switch. Most a/c guys carry them on the truck. The contacts get pitted from coming on and off so much. I was telling my husband it is probably about time to change ours.

I agree with everyone. Get out of the heat!!! Or take lots of cold showers. The freezer sheet idea isn't a bad one either. Do what ever it takes to stay cool. Go out and have a long lunch or dinner till the AC repairman can get there.

Good Luck

Yes, get out of the heat!!!  Drink cold drinks as much as you can, or use small towels wet with cold water or ice, and pass them over your face, neck, etc. (this works for me, I've found out).  Hope you fix the AC soon!

I just returned from a 1-month vacation in hotels with no AC and a 3-week stay in a city close to the Equator with 112F heat index.  Horrible.  I am still paying the consequences.

Go someplace cool.  Go to the mall and sit in the courtyard.  Get a motel room for the day/night.  Go to a friend or family member that has AC.  GET OUT of the heat!!!

Get wet, even your clothes, but especially your hair and sit where the fan blows the hardest.

Ask family or friends to bring over another fan or pick one up at the store for you.

Good luck!

OMG, i am thinking,,my first thought was LEAVE, go where its cooler for the day. Or get in cold water....do you have any cooling equipment, like vests or such.

You can throw a sheet in the freezer and use it until with another freezing so you can switch.

good luck, meg
