High Igg Index and/or O-bands

My CSF shows a high Igg Index and high Igg synthesis.  I have O-bands in CSF and blood but the blood was taken the following week becuase it was overlooked.

Is it considered positive on the Igg Index alone or do you need both?

sorry,  I'm just trying to understand.

thanks!!

I'm sorry I can't help you  but I did read about your neuro visit, etc. and you are making small steps towards a dx.

Even though I can't help with this topic , I am sending good thoughts and wishes that your good medical continues and you find all the answers!

Hope someone with this knowledge steps in and gives you the answers you need.

Hugs,
Ren

It looks like the Wikipedia is talking about Igg that is found in the blood which is a separate thing.  My serum (blood) level is normal.

It's the CSF Igg index, and Igg synthesis that are high.  I think risnerrose right but hopefully Quix will chime in and we will all learn!

Here's the wiki article on Igg...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immunoglobulin_G

Personally, I would say that a high IgG index is not a positive sign for MS.  It just means you have antibodies in the blood, which could be from several different things.  But let's see if Quix weighs in!

I was negative for O-bands, but IGG index and synthesis were both high . . . I received a diagnosis of MS.  I do also have brain lesions, which had remained unchanged when I was diagnosed.  The LP sealed the deal.

Yea,  I would sure get the results.  Here is what I was told though.

My CSF was sent to Los Angeles for the test.  There are only a few places that know how to run this test.  It involves using a gel preparation and having time for the bands to grow.  I think it is called electropheresis and it is time consuming.

My results took weeks.

Both of my LP's were being done for MS.  I don't even know if I had O-bands.  I never even heard about them until I joined this forum.  I have sent requests for LP results (both were out of state) but I haven't gotten them yet.  And, with both of them the neuro had test results very quickly.

Ren--you are so incredibly kind!  Thank you for caring and for taking the time to respond.  I know you have too much on your plate and hope you will get a break soon!

Addi,  were they looking for something inflammatory or something else?  I don't know for sure but if they were looking for the 'positive indicators' for MS you probably need a new one.  Did you have O-bands?

Thanks for the explanation, Lois.  So, if I never got blood test, were my LP's a waste??

My PCP appointment was yesterday.  ;0)

Hi Addi!

The blood test is supposed to be taken at the same time as the LP----there was a mistake with my procedure, and the blood was taken the following week.

The main reason for the blood draw is to see if there are O-bands in the blood as well as the CSF.  I think if you have both they compare them and if they appear the same then the O-Bands don't mean anything.

If I understand right, the High Igg Index is also considered positive.  I am hoping that Quix will help with this.

Hugs----is this the day of your PCP appt.?

Hi. Lois-

I am glad you got your results back.  I don't know the answers to your question but I am sure you will get them here.

I keep seeing about a blood test that is needed at the same time?  This is new to me.  Do you know why?  I never got one.

Hugs,
Addi
