How long did it take you?

If you have had a LP, how did it take you to get results back?  What is typical?  Would love your response.
Thank you so much and blessings

Okay wanted to give an update and see what you all think.  I met with my neuro today and he did go over the LP results with me.  He said everything can back fine, but was concerned about the technician hitting a nerve root.  It has given me some issues lately.  Anyway, I do know they didn't take a beginning and ending pressure.  He said given the fact that my MRIs have been clear and there were no O bands he doesn't believe I have MS.  He still is honoring me with a referral to a MS specialist and I have been scheduled for Jan. 25th.  I picked up copies today of my MRI's, but strangely enough the only tests listed are w/o contrast and I know I had them with contrast as well.  I am going to investigate this tomorrow!

I asked him if I had been tested for all MS mimics and he sais all that fit the symptoms I've been having.  I asked again about Sjogrens since my eyes read a 0 and 2 for moisture and my mouth is dry....he said my SSA and SSB had come back neg in past, but he couldn't be absolutely positive I didn't have it.  He is suggesting all of my symptoms are coming from my Celiac Disease.  I see where he is at a loss given tests are coming back negative, and that is the one thing that has been confirmed....BUT I have been on the Gluten free diet for 2 1/2 years, and am doing well, why would these neuro symptoms begin plaguing me and getting worse, when as far as Celiac goes, I'm well.  Even my gastro doctor didn't think the neuro symptoms were from Celiac.

My neuro is great, I really think he wants to help, I just think he is at a loss.  I am too....let's see what the MS specialist says on the 25th.  Any thoughts or words to share?  I sure could use it right now.

Blessings

Results *can* come back very quickly, but I think turnaround time depends on geographic location and the particular lab that the sample is sent to (does the sample have to travel far just to get to a lab that is backed up, or is it being drawn at a hospital where the results can be run in house?).

I had my LP on December 21st and they called me with the results on December 27th. Given the holiday, I think that was an either 3 or 4 business day turnaround - super fast. When they called me with the results, I made an appointment to go over them in detail with my neuro, and at that appointment he gave me a copy of the results for my files.

I think anyone who has not been offered a copy of their LP results should ask for a copy to take home for their own review and to keep in their personal health file.

I had my LP done on an urgent basis, immediately after being seen by an on-call neuro whom I was referred to by my GP.   The neuro had his resident perform the LP right after my appt as they both strongly suspected MS, and as I live nearly 5 hour drive away they didn't want me to have to make the long trip back the following week.  The resident did it in the outpatients clinic of the university hospital and put a rush on the results.  I got them within 24 hours of the procedure while I was still hanging out at outpatients waiting for a bed on the neurology unit.  I never got the bed; I stayed 2 nights in a residence adjoined to the hospital, and they started IVSM as soon as my results came back (no O-bands, but abnormal) .  I got them back so fast as I was essentially treated as an in-patient.  I'm sure it would have taken longer had those circumstances been different.

My results arrived in a little less than three weeks - but they had warned me it could be longer.  It is a highly specialized test and not all labs are equipped to do it and it might have to be shipped out to another lab..

I hope you don't have to wait too long!

I was told "everything looks OK" by a relief doctor while my regular GP was away on vacation, i think about 2 weeks after my LP.

Imagine my surprise about 3 weeks later when I went to see my Doc on another matter and he said "I guess you know your LP was positive for O bands".......WHAT!!

The relief  doctor simply did not know what she was talking about. At the time I saw her the Dr's office had only received the lab report on the blood test, not the spinal fluid.

A positive LP helped me get a dx of MS.

I agree with others that it seems too quick to get both reports already.

Good thing you're seeing your Neuro right away, he'll be able to get to the bottom of this.

Stacie,

You could ask to see the results for spinal fluid and blood. The lab will produce two reports concerning the existence of oligoclonal bands.

You can respond to the specialist that is fine but can I have a copy of the two results for my records please.

The reason I am asking is I had my LP done last Thursday later in the afternoon.  The neurology office told me it would take at least 2-3 weeks because of the process.  I was told the same thing in the hospital after the LP was finished.  I was very shocked when I got a call back this past Tuesday morning with a simple, "everything looked normal".  Even given the fact of the holiday. I asked if she was giving me the LP results.  She said yes.  I asked, " All of them?"  She seemed confused.  I asked what tests were being run.  She thought all that was run was the "MS test".  I just feel uneasy to say the least.  I had to schedule a consultation to speak with the neuro.  I see him tomorrow (Friday).  I'm trying to make a list of questions to ask him.  Other than the obvious, "What tests were run"  what  other things would you not leave without asking.

Thanks guys so much!  Any other input about LP would be great too!

Hi Stacie,

I was told that it would take one week. I was outraged to wait for over three weeks to get my results because they 'lost' the sample. I have since learned that it may be possible to have the result after two to three days using the latest technology machine.

Hey, Stacie!  The spinal fluid has to go through the process of separating the proteins.  This is a complicated procedure, and the lab usually sends it to a specialty lab for processing.  I would guess that you'll see your results in six weeks, if you're lucky.
