I'm sure if Quix were here today,

she'd share this news item, or at least commend it.

Doc Q, I had forgotten who she was.  Thank you for the reminder; Wikipedia quickly filled in the blanks, and I remembered why I agreed with your assessment and Prettymomma's.  May God be with all of you who parent or otherwise work with kids requiring special care; you have my enduring respect.

My sixteen year old son was dx's with asperger's syndrome.  He is wonderfully sweet but still has his strengths and weaknesses.  Seeing more of his strengths as he gets more mature.  Gives me a warm feeling that all the time and work I put in when he was young is paying off now. :)  Keep up the good work.

Haven't started the work with driving and jobs yet.  It is coming soon though...

Just wanted to say prettymomma that my 18 year old son has Aspergers and the pictures system really works and so did the stickers too.  It was a very differcult time raising him and its not over yet.

But it does get better and the challenges change.  We are tackling driving and job/career.  sigh....a biggie!!  Hang in there , you are doing a great job by the sounds of it.  He is so lucky to have you for a mum!!

Ugh Jenny McCarthy  really irritates me. What I have found that is most helpful with my personal journey with autism is I look for every resource I can possibly find to help me raise my son and deal with his behavior and make things as stress free as possible for him. Im his biggest advocate and I have to be. Much like myself with the MS. What has been really working for me lately with him is ABA (applied behavior analysis therapy) and visual aides for EVERYTHING! He seems to really "get it" when he sees actual pictures (that I have taken with the digital cam) of objects and things that he needs to do as well as pics of him doing something he isnt supposed to. Also I have a constant on going reward system for EVERYTHING with stickers. Its truly exhausting parenting him and mind you I have 3 other kids as well. But I LOVE him to death and wouldnt have him any other way.
Sorry my little rant was a little off subject for the MS forum. But autism is a subject very close to heart for me and I try to load my brain with as much info about it as possible, again much like my MS.

Yeah, I have to comment.  I am thrilled that the Lancet finally admitted that this fraud should have been scrutinized more thoroughly before publishing.  10 of the 13 named members of the study recanted their confidence in it long ago.

Yes, Wakefield is still making the lecture circuit as a hero.

Now, the thimerosol has been pretty thoroughly debunked as the cause of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

First, it has been out of the vaccines (the VAST majority) for over a decade, yet the diagnosis rate has not fallen.

Second, in places with sky-high mercury levels in the ground water (like towns near the silver and gold mines of Nevada) do not have elevated incidence of
Autism Spectrum diagnoses.

It's a sensitive topic for pediatricians as we are being called the pawns of Big Pharma.  We are the ones who "hawk" the vaccines.  I will skip my usual tirade of the big coming epidemics and just say that I have never seen a larger, more dedicated group of child advocates than my colleagues in that specialty.  After Wakefield's announcement of his studies there were huge studies by pediatric researchers done world-wide and NOT paid for by Big Pharma that could not reproduce ANY of his findings.

The man was a fraud and there was evidence that he was "in bed" with the legal firm representing 11 of the families of autistic children in their lawsuits againsts the doctors and the manufacturers of the MMR vaccine.

Just pray that the vaccination levels do not continue to drop or we will look back on the spectre of H1N1 as a mere blip.  We are already seeing mini, localized outbreaks of measles, whooping cough, rubella, and a resurgence of chicken pox.  Don't even ask me what the three cases of invasive strep (flesh-eating bacteria) in chicken-pox looked like.

I fear, though that the Jenny McCarthy's of the world will see this move by the Lancet as just more conspiratorial (lost the word........harassment.....smear campaign) of poor Dr. W by the medical/pharmaceutical establishment.

What I did looked like the Snoopy Dance, but it was just my foot bouncing with clonus,

Thank you for that, i've had flamalderhyde stuck in my head all day and i knew that was wrong. I didn't mean to sound like i was on a soap box, i've been involved with Autism for a lot of years and Asperger's for a life time, blah blah seems to just spew out of my mouth sometimes, sorry about that.

Topic was a bit of a needed distraction anyway, i feel like i'm heading for another episode, little things are slipping again, but its hot here, back to schooling my now too bright to handle 12yr old (going on 24yr old lol), so i'm hoping its just a psuedo and not the start of another bad year!

cheers......JJ

I'm guessing you're thinking of thalidomide, that caused so many deformities in the 1960s?

Yes you spelt Asperger Syndrome correctly, there is also some debate regarding its connection to Autism, some Drs say that Asperger's is just Autism at a lesser degree and some say Asperger's is not Autism at all. Autistic Spectrum Disorder is now the common umbrella dx, though that covers someone unquestionably disabled to the higher end profoundly gifted Asperger's and anything in between, semi meaningless dx.

Asperger's has within itself levels of function, for that reason i think Asperger's is a cousin to Autism, eliments of Autism but not necessarily the same thing. I did a lot of research and unfortunately, a lot of other studies seem questionable science too.

You have to admit, people would rather have all the facts to enable them to make an informed concent, medical science is not infalible just think of (ahhh lost a noun again lol the medication given to pregnant mothers to help with nausia) it disabled most babies in utro. Nothing is without risk but until the immunisation controversy, no one thought twice about it, granted its got out of hand by miss information and even bizzar dribble but its not unexpected when you look at how they handled legitimate questions.

In my mind the murcury that WAS used as a perservative, was removed due to the collective panic of parents brought about by Wakefield and science came up with a less harmful alternative, i doubt it would of happened without the controversy. I dont think the actual cause of Austim will be believed once its found, the scrutany will be immense, as it should be. Until they do find the cause of Autism, millions of innocents will suffer, they must find the cause!!

Cheers.......JJ

Exactly.  I have a nephew with Asperger Syndrome (hope I spelled that right), which is supposed to be related to autism, as I recall.  It would certainly make his parents feel much better to simply know the cause, with a reasonable degree of certainty.  It won't help a thing, though, to blame something that is actually very beneficial to millions, unless there's very strong indication, recognized by a broad spectrum of professionals looking at varied studies, properly controlled and peer-reviewed.

I posted this to my facebook page - a friend of mine has a child with autism, and she's been quite vocal about vaccines and their dangers.  I can understand how protective she is, but there's no evidence for her belief.

It amazed me when I saw the investigative piece on him last summer and then when this hit the news last week - so many parents still cling to his explanations of the dangers of immunizations and autism.  He is almost worshipped by some of these people who are desperate for an answer about their children.

And yes, Quix would be doing the snoopy dance.
