I'd gladly send a little warmth if I could; it's around 80 during the day, and 65 at night, and humid. I'm adjusting, but need to be careful in the heat.
I'm going to post a picture from my cell phone camera, maybe more than one.
Kathy
Have fun and bring back pictures to post and share.
I believe envy is one of the seven deadly sins...boy am I in trouble!
Enjoy

Wow! I sure am glad you are OK! That was a close call if I ever heard one! Have a wonderful trip and bring back some sunshine and a little warmth. Just a little would be nice. Take good care of yourself!
I dunno, I'm such a cat lover I'd probably want a Jaguar (love that hood ornament), though a Lamborgini would be nice....
:o)
Kathy
If your insurance company declares the taxi driver at fault, his insurance company will have to pay to rent you a car while yours' is in the shop. Let's see.....maybe a Juaguar? Or a Hummer? Or Cadillac Escalade? LOL No, I have it! A Lamborgini!
Maggie
OK, it's only a little $$ for an extra suicase. I already promised the couch to Ada, so you'll have to make a bed out of the easy chair and the coffee table, Tee hee!
One of these days, a bunch of us will have to get together. I still think that would be really cool!
Ahem, I heard a rumor that you've been working too much; maybe I SHOULD toss you in a suitcase and haul you off to an island!
Take care of yourself, and let's all do have a better New Year!
Hugs,
Kathy
I'm just so happy to hear that you weren't hurt!! Vehicles can be fixed or replaced, you are irreplaceable!
I was glad to read that you had a witness so that should help you out too. Sheesh, what a moron, double parked and then pulls out but blames you!
Let it all go now and focus on your upcoming holiday. (as I sit here green with envy) I can fold up real small and fit in a fairly large suitcase you know. hint hint haha
May 2009 be a better year for us all!!
Hugs

That weather was so awful; the only way you could have avoided that accident is if your car had already broken down and you weren't on the road; black ice is just nasty. I'm so glad that you and yours came out of it with the worst damage being to your car.
I don't have insurance for a rental, so when they work on my car, I'll be using public transit or walking, which works for me. My insurance company can get me a discount on a rental, but I don't think I'll need one.
Oh, yeah, 2009 has lots of room for improvement! Not that I didn't have some good times in 2008, but I'm hoping for a much better 2009 for all of us.
I'm sorry you are going through this too. I felt the same way: This c-rappy year just HAD to spring one more on me on it's way out!
Both me and my passenger had to leave by ambulance, though neither of us needed to be admitted. I'm still not even sure if the person ahead of me was in their car or if/how I contributed to their injuries (I ran into a pre-existing accident due to black ice).
I'm just so thankful for insurance and that 2008 is almost over! I'm glad you can still go on your trip and tidy up the car mess when you get back. I'm in a rental for now (mine is totaled) and I'm just trying to take it easy on myself!
What luck, eh? But at least we know that 2009 is full of potential for better health and happier times!
I just got back from getting my estimate, $1500, roughly, not knowing how much damage to the electrical system there is. He said that he thinks that the electrical system of the door locks isn't connected to the rest of the electrical system in a way that there could be further damage, but they won't know until they get inside.
I'll leave it until I get back, and hopefully the insurance companies will have fought it out and found in my favor. I did find out that double parking in Portland is indeed illegal, a $70 fine. Don't know if it will make any difference, but any way that yahoo was in the wrong must help my case, I hope.
Rena, you are so funny! I've had some really great cab drivers in Seattle and Anaheim, but that's it, none here. I'd rather take the bus to the train station rather than call a cab here. The place where this cabby works has a gas station; inside of a building where they do car repairs and have a car wash for the cabs.
I stopped going there when I drove in and saw the attendant smoking a cigarette, not far from the pumps, in that enclosed space. Their gas is cheap, but not worth the chance of getting blown up!
I thought that in really cold climates they had places where you plugged into battery warmers so you didn't have to idle. Then again, I've always lived in Oregon, so I only know stuff from books about the kind of temperatures you and db are talking about! I doubt that they were all over, even if you had them. Never mind!
db, I would have such a hard time getting over hitting anyone, I can't even imagine! That's one reason why i always drive so carefully; I was walking one day and saw a young boy run out in the street and get hit. It stayed with me for days, wondering how the boy was, how the parent was, how the driver was.
I definitely am happy with the small amount of damage. It may take a week to fix once I take it in, but in the mean time it's just a little inconvenient, and it will be parked for 17 days starting Thursday, anyway!
I've already packed the sunscreen, my sun hat, a cooler that folds down so I can keep ice water in the car when sight-seeing, and the desire to not have anything interfere with a relaxing good time.
Kathy
oh that's horrible... I'm glad you are alright and had a witness for that. The weather is just terrible this year and that doesn't help with driving or peoples frustrations.
my hubby has had times with cabbies too.. some are so bad...not all...just some
take care

That totally *****! On a positive note though, you have a witness that confirms your version of the story, and more importantly, no one was hurt, or worse. When you talked about the guy coming out of the restaurant and running across the street in front of you, I thought you were going to say that you accidentally hit him! So I was relieved when you said it was just damage to the two vehicles (and they're both still drive-able, by the sound of it). I don't mean to minimize the stressfulness of the incident, nor the hassles that may follow, just to say how much worse it could have been. That is how I try to think of things that stress me out: it could have been worse. And you are going to Hawaii!!! What a great way to put this out of your mind for a while. Enjoy the sun, sand and surf. We are getting a serious arctic chill up here in Northern Alberta and I am quite jealous!!
ps: don't forget the sunscreen! I use SPF 60 whenever I can find it. Too much sun very bad for the skin!!
Hi Kathy,
Boy, aren't you ready for that vacation?
I'm sorry you are having to deal with all this, but glad that you weren't hurt.
Take care of yourself and get ready for the big vacation. Don't let this take away your fun, you really need to get away and relax and enjoy!!!
Hugs,
doni
So sorry to hear about your car and having to run into a jerk of a cabby! They tend to think they own the road and have the right to do what they want because they are a service...I don't consider them a service, I consider them someone I have to call only as a last resort, you know, sort of like an embalmer??? he he
I hope things work out for you and you have a great trip...sure could handle going with you and getting out of this terrible cold...and they want to instill a no-idle law in Alberta to save the environment..HAH!!! Just see if they can get away with giving me a ticket for idling my car when it's -30...stupid politicians!!
Anyway, let us know what the damages are when you find out and I hope your insurance will treat you properly and ensure you are looked after.
Lots of Hugs,
Rena
If people got tickets for double parking, the city would be rich!
I called the repair place, and they can take a look at my car as soon as I can get it there, and since it's about 4 blocks away, that will be soon, if my car lets me in!
:o)
Thanks a bunch!
Kathy
I'm glad it was only your car that got banged up. It does sound like it was the cab drivers fault. Heck..he was the one double parked. Isn't that illegal?
Anyhoo...I wouldn't worry about it like Maggie suggested. I would deal with it when you get back home. Have fun on your vacation and be safe. Sounds like the perfect getaway to bring in the new year.
HUGS
Ouch! Your run-in with a cabbie was MUCH worse than mine; hope you weren't hurt too badly and that his insurance paid and paid big!
All that's left is to call and see when I can have an estimate on repairs done, then I'l try and put it out of my mind. I'm going to physical therapy tomorrow, so getting in and out of the car will be a challenge, but it should be fine.
I'm going to have the physical therapist do soft tissue work, ultra-sound, e-stim, gentle manipulation; everything to get my body travel-ready!
hugs,
Kathy
So glad you weren't hurt, could have been much worse. Car behind you might not have been able to stop and rear-ended you. Typical for cab driver to blame everyone but himself. One rear-ended me several years ago when I was stopped for a car backing up. He was talking on phone, and hit me doing 40mph. Really a mess. You have insurance just for this reason. Let them deal with it, and have a great vacation. You'll be much better able to deal with the whole mess, after you come back. Take care, and have a great time!
Maggie
