MRI Protocol????

Several posts have mentioned MRI protocol.  Does this refer to the way the MRI is conducted or the way it is read?  Both of my MRIs were done because of possible strokes or TIAs.  Would this be different than an MRI if MS was suspected???

Thanks,

Sherry

The one I know about is from the Consortium of MS Centers and is at:

www.mscare.org/cmsc/images/pdf/MRIprotocol2003.pdf

The main points seem to be:

Field Strength: 1.0 Tesla or higher

Slice Thickness: < 3mm and no gap and in plane resolution of < 1mm x 1 mm for both brain and spinal cord.

Then there's a bunch of more technical stuff that's over my head (mostly what views to take) and instructions about gadolinium (contrast) and what should be in the report.

Basically, I think the point is to establish minimums and standard procedures to maximize the chance of finding the MS lesions on the MRI. Although it talks about what goes in the report, it seems to mainly be about the way the MRI is performed.

Yes,

also same question for me.  My MRI was done to check pituitary adenoma.  It was just four slices perpendicular and then vertical ones.
