I went to see the neurologist yesterday, that was interesting. I gave him my symtoms that I have been having. I explained the above.
Sarah, my facial numbness is around my mouth and eye on the right side. I did see my eye MD and see dilated my eyes and said she didnt see anything. I have never had Migraines but have had headaches since this pain in my right eye when I look up\down and right to left. I am 40 years old :( Yep the big 40 this year!
The neurologist ordered Lumbar puncture, blood test and VEP test and EMG.
He also questioned me about anxiety and depression. I am on Prozac for depression and have been for 12 years and yes I am anxious at times, I have fought anxiety since I was a little girl. He was pretty hot on stess and anxiety. I feel pretty sure that this is not it, I have been pretty intune with my mental health due to my hx with depression and anxiety.
I was pretty let down with the way the appt went. I just didnt feel he was listening to me. He did order further tests but I just felt brushed off. Maybe I was being to over sensitive. I just have felt yucky for so long.
Im just really struggling with all of this :( Sorry to sound so whiney!
You did not say how old you are but things other than MS can cause the foci, including all that the radiologist mentioned.
The pain in your eye, have you seen an eye doctor? It could very well be your migraines or it might be optic neuritis. Am puzzled by the numbness on both sides of your face...
I'd wait for the doctors opinion. Several other things can be the cause. You should have labs done to rule out any other cause. Many diseases mimic the ones mentioned above by Ricobord and there are over 20 that mimic MS.
Good luck.
The numbness and tingling is on my right side, in my face, hand, leg and foot. It doesnt vary. I will read the article. Thanks!
Do your tingling and numbness move around or vary at all? Or are they steady and in the same place all the time?
I ask because if they move around or come and go, they could be caused by Borreliosis (Lyme Disease). It is in Brazil, but is believed to be a different species than the one that causes North American Lyme. It can mimic MS and even cause small brain lesions.
This is an article by a graduate student who went looking for Borrelia in Brazil and found it in 1992. He learned that patients there test negative according to the CDC standard (probably because it is a different species of Borrelia than in the US) and they are unable to culture it. This was written in '09.

Since accurate testing is not readily available, I assume doctors there must make a clinical diagnosis.
This is a brief article stating that they were able to prove Lyme Disease infection in Brazilian patients in 2010.
